I've always wondered how long the CW would be sustainable in its current form, given the shared ownership between AT&T & ViacomCBS, but to say the network is on its deathbed because their summer programming slate is weak isn't a compelling argument.  The CW's summer shows have never been particularly compelling, except for when they hold back a show from the Spring (as in iZombie's last couple of seasons). What's going to be telling is what happens come fall, since they've already said they're starting their 'new season' in January (primarily because coronavirus shut down production on Riverdale & the Berlanti DC shows).

And not for nothing, but the other networks don't exactly run The Complete Works of Shakespeare during the summer either.  (Holy Moly, Don't, AGT, Masterchef, Ultimate Tag...do I need to go on?). And for YEARS ABC ran a Canadian import ("Rookie Blue") in a prime Thursday night slot over the summer...

One could easily see Riverdale and the DC shows moving to HBO Max except that the Netflix contract for most of them could get in the way of that.

I see that they're showing the original Taskmaster which is one of my favourite shows full stop. I never saw the short-lived US version, but for throwaway fun, Taskmaster is great. How it'll work in the US, where I don't think many will recognise any of the comedians, I don't know. But then I didn't have a clue who Dave Chappelle was until I saw him on Netflix, so, I wouldn't let it worry you.

Absolutely no idea about Killer Camp because it's the sort of thing that I'd not watch if it was the last thing on earth. And I've already said I enjoyed the first series of Dead Pixels (which shares a lot of DNA with Apple TV+'s Mythic Quest.

I don't get the downer on acquiring shows. If they're any good, and audiences haven't seen them, then great. Most networks in the rest of the world acquire at least some of their schedule. It's only the US where it's barely done.

In any case, it sounds to be like the CW is being far more realistic about when they'll have new episodes airing than some networks.

Personally, I'd think cancelling "Katy Keene" would be a sign of common sense and good taste coming to a network, rather than a sign of imminent failure.

"Fleabag"'s first series was screened on IFC (which considers itself now alt-comedy in terms of original programming, even if they show repeats of "That 70s Show" and "2.5 Men") after the Amazon release.  Sister channel SundanceTV screened the first two seasons of Amazon's "Transparent."

Yeah - I know that these shows all appeared on not-PBS :-). Normal People on Hulu, and I May Destroy You on HBO. But they were all BBC shows, with at least two getting US network money well down the production line (i.e. they were more acquisitions than originals).

We wouldn't know about PBS here in the Bay Area; all three stations are pretty much on permanent pledge-drive rotation, and I don't think anyone wants to see washed-up rock acts or Suze Orman naked or swearing.

Not anymore.  It and "Fridge Wars" stunk in the ratings.


Sources told Variety the net is discussing options with its producers, "one of which could be to move the series to its CW Seed streaming service."

The Taskmaster YouTube channel has been posting non-geoblocked videos from past series and, as someone who knows about 60% of the contestants on any given series, I think it does lose something when you don't know the competitors by reputation.

That said, the British-style panel game where the game is secondary to the comedy doesn't seem to do so well here. But we are willing to watch celebrities be silly if it's in the service of playing a game (see To Tell the Truth, Match Game, and Hollywood Game Night, which are all pretty game-forward.)
