It will be the first time that the tournament will appear on a streaming service, with Netflix securing rights in every language for the U.S., including Puerto Rico. The company says that it is planning English and Spanish-language broadcasts. It will also develop shoulder programming and studio shows to complement the live matches.

I mean...they can't do a worse job than FOX, can they?

This is absolutely correct. If all Netflix does is not hire Carli Lloyd and Alexi Lalas, they will get an A+ and I will sing their praises from the highest hills of suburban Chicago.

I think this is a big win all around. Netflix outbid Fox Sports and Telemundo so that means more money for the development of women’s football. In men’s international tournaments Fox would show games over the air until the US was eliminated and then push them all to FS1 until the final. If someone wants to follow Argentina or France and watch all of their games they just need Netflix and a schedule.

As cable declines its audience is going to get smaller and older and any sport that wants to grow its following among young people is going to have to find a way to be available streaming.

I agree with this.

My fear is the quality of the experience. The only sport I watch on streaming now is Thursday Night Football, and it is miserable. The bloated, obnoxious pregame show is presented on the same stream as the game, and it has as many or more ads as a broadcast NFL game. Fine controls on FF are extremely difficult, so one must either watch the ads (which I mostly refuse to do) or resign oneself to missing multiple plays after an ad. Soccer of course has fewer, or no, ads during okay, so maybe this won’t be so bad, and Netflix has a better interface.
