Chris Evans was chosen to voice Buzz in Lightyear, Pixar's Toy Story offshoot about the cosmic superhero on which the Allen-voiced toy is based... but that didn't stop Allen's friend...

As others on the TweetyBox pointed out, Heaton was curiously silent when Patrick Warburton replaced Allen in the role. But now that Allen and Heaton are presenting themselves as fringe conservatives…

As I understand it, “Lightyear” exists within the “Toy Story” universe as a live-action film version of the “Buzz Lightyear” cartoon that the toy is based on. So it makes sense that they would use a different actor for live action than they use to do voiceover for the cartoon/toy (this, of course, happens all the time in our universe as well).

Just as we have a bunch of people playing Harley Quinn:  Margot Robbie in the DC Cinematic Universe, Lady Gaga in the upcoming "Joker 2" (which is not considered DCU canon), Kaley Cuoco in the HBO Max animated "Harley Quinn" and Tara Strong in various animated TV and video game projects.

Heaton baffles me. My mentor (an Emmy-nominated director) is about as liberal as I can imagine, but she and Heaton are very friendly, worked together (very well) on "The Middle," and are trying to put a new project together. I guess her "outrage" (real? convenient?) is directed where she feels it'll make the most noise. (Conversely, it could be as simple as the quality of the work overcoming the political differences.)

1.  As the article points out, these are two different characters. It’s less like Kilmer replacing Keaton in Batman and more like casting a new actor to play Elvis in a movie after a different actor played an Elvis impersonator  for several years.

2. Tim Allen is old AF. It’s hardly a liberal conspiracy to think that young film goers will be more attracted to a film attached to Captain America from the recent and most popular film series in history than to one attached to the Tool Time guy from a TV show in the last century.

3. Don’t make me bring up one of the only funny, and really mean, bits Ricky Gervais ever had on one of his Golden Globe monologues…

4. Isn’t this film coming out like, tomorrow? Doesn’t that mean it has been in production for several years? How good a friend is Heaton of Allen if she is just finding this out now?

5. The right wing is up in arms because this new movie features a loving, committed lesbian relationship. But Hollywood’s right wing is learning they can’t just openly hate gay people if they intend to keep their careers intact, so they are choosing to denounce/boycott this movie because they replaced Tim Allen. Same result, different process.

Maybe they should have written some gay sex scenes for Chris Evans and Tim Allen and then everyone would be happy..

Lightyear trails the Jurassic World movie in B.O., is getting so-so reviews owing to the non-connection to the earlier films, and is the first Pixar property to début in theaters since 2020...

Similar to the take by Puck’s Matt Belloni, who was surprised by the underperformance:

“What happened with Lightyear? I took the over on the $75 million tracking, and it came in at just $51 million, more in line with lesser Pixar originals and not a Toy Story spinoff. Yikes. I polled a few distribution experts, and nobody thinks the same-sex kiss was a meaningful deterrent (sorry, Ted), but it certainly didn’t help. The bigger problems were a) The movie isn’t thematically connected to Toy Story; b) marketing didn’t properly explain the tricky conceit; and c) Disney’s streaming strategy has devalued Pixar by dumping its past three movies on Disney+.

The Quorum’s David Herrin, who does the WIH movie polling chart, has a couple other explanations:

1. We don’t fully understand the post-pandemic box office: We have a pretty good read on superhero and tentpole movies in this era, but it doesn't mean the same will be true for family films. It could be that at this moment there is a $70 million ceiling (like Sonic 2). Three animated films are opening in July. If Minions—likely the strongest of the three—performs in line with Lightyear, then we'll know that the family audience hasn't fully returned to theaters.

2. The reviews weren’t there: Lightyear ranks No. 21 among Pixar films. Those at the bottom of this list are among Pixar's softest performers.

3. The market is becoming more saturated: As I wrote a few weeks ago, big films haven't had much competition. Now they do. Perhaps we need to revise our assumptions.

I know a great many people with young children who have been waiting for the FDA to approve of Covid vaccines for ages 5 and under, and have avoided most large gatherings until that occurs. Since FDA authorization is now in the works, the late summer/early fall box offices might be higher as parents feel safer.
