If there’s any justice, the series will be called “Soft Ball with Kaitlan Collins”

Speaking to journalism grads at Columbia and accepting their namesake award, Christiane Amanpour called somebody at the recent CNN town hall a "nasty person"...

Traditionally liberal CNN personalities like Anderson Cooper and Christiane Amanpour are going to find themselves without an audience as Licht steers the channel rightward and everyone stops watching. Cooper and Amanpour are going to pretend to be above it all but they can’t escape the consequences of the editorial choices.

The question is this:  The right have been told for years and years by Fox News how CNN is evil. Does Licht think he can get them to change their mind when that's all they've heard for years--and unless they can get Tucker Carlson to join them and maybe Hannity or Ingraham? I'll bet that if Carlson joined them tomorrow, the right would be calling him a traitor.

And let this be said:  If Licht is so right wing, why did he stay with Colbert so long?  As much as us in the group didn't like what he did to the Late Show, it still has to be said that Colbert wasn't a ratings hit on CBS until LIcht took over.  It's not exactly like Republicans came flocking to guest on Colbert when he was a hit (and is--"Gutfeld!" is only successful in the ratings when everybody else is on vacation or on strike, plus he's on at 11 and has the built-in advantage of viewers who leave the TV on Fox News all day and won't switch unless Meemaw wants to watch Andy Griffith reruns on MeTV).

Only Chris knows the answer to that, and if he hasn't talked in depth about it, we'll have to wait...     B

A producer doesn’t have to be a fan of or politically aligned with the content being produced. It’s probably easier to grasp that with music producers like Clive Davis who worked with artists of all genres and backgrounds. I could easily produce a high-rated reality TV series, and I despise the genre. Licht might make money for CNN, just as he did for Colbert‘s show, but he doesn’t have to like either.

As someone who calls his mom "Meemaw" for her grandmother title because "Mimi" was rejected by my wife because it reminded her too damn much of Kathy Kinney, I protest this on the grounds that my mom is too damn busy watching MSNBC and QVC.

Everything Mark says about CNN’s strategy being doomed to narrow, rather than broaden their audience is correct. They are alienating not just liberals, but moderates with their hard right turn, and have almost chance to attract a significant fraction of the Fox News audience.

I think the way to make sense of this is to understand that Licht’s mandate is not really to either increase ratings or improve journalism; instead it is very simply to please John Malone, who just wants to dilute an independent news voice.

I don't know that Licht is right-wing so much as he's a spineless company man who'll do exactly what the bosses tell him. At CBS, Colbert being liberal (however ineptly the show came off) made money, so that's what he gave Viacom/Paramount. John Malone wants CNN to tilt to the right, so that's what he's giving them there. As Tom Lehrer sang, "Don't say that he's hypocritical / Say rather that he's apolitical."

As for Amanpour and Anderson, the former could probably write her own ticket anywhere if she has enough and leaves, and Anderson, with his "silo" scolding, has already indicated how much of a toadying lickspittle he's willing to be.

Uh, no. She was quoting Trump, who went after the moderator when he didn't like a question. From your article:

“We know Trump and his tendencies, everyone does, he just seizes the stage and dominates. No matter how much flack the moderator tries to aim at the incoming, it doesn’t often work. I would have dropped the mic at ‘nasty person,’ but then that’s me,” Amanpour said
