The public radio network has already begun to lay off 10% of its staff and not fill vacancies and has sent packing the long-running storytelling/science show "Invisibilia", the hip-hop docuseries "Louder Than a Riot," the how-people-overseas-view-the-US show "Rough Translation" and the relatively-new "Wait, Wait...Don't Tell Me!" stablemate talk show "Everyone & Their Mom." The staffs are being laid and the shows will disappear over the next few months:
The reason behind all this is the drop in underwriting revenue (which on the podcasts, they can actually call "advertising," since the FCC doesn't regulate podcasts--and on podcasts you can do what is verboten on non-commercial radio, like price comparisons and "calls to action"), in particular the podcasts, probably because NPR doesn't allow its hosts to do sales pitches for the sponsors.
