When I was an NBC Page, Springer was scheduled to appear on the Tonight show to promote a straight-to-video episode of his syndicated talk show that no TV station would air. The episode was entitled “I’m in love with my horse.” I refused to work on the show that day. The bosses were very grumpy with me. It was the only time I boycotted a guest. I stand by my decision.

In September 1992, I saw two episodes of his show taped at NBC in Chicago shortly after I arrived in town as a bright-eyed college freshman. That was when it was still a relatively serious show, akin to "Donahue," rather than what it turned into.

There was a lunch break between the two shows, and I found myself in the men's room using the urinal next to Jerry. I couldn't think of anything to say, though. (I did wonder why there wasn't a separate restroom for "talent.")
