Filling in the Covid gaps this fall are season 1 of “Star Trek: Discovery” (Thursdays) and season 4 of “One Day at a Time” (Mondays).

So a lot of people can see how bad Discovery is... that seems unwise

Discovery Season 3 will premiere October 15 on AllAccess, three weeks after they start airing Season 1 on the mothership.  I don't know if they think they'll get new regular eyeballs for the show with this, but I suppose it's possible, even with the changes in the show for Season 3.

I didn't think Discovery was horrible, just inconsistent. There have been some good episodes (and some stinkers), and I've become invested in some of the characters, not the main character though. I don't find her very sympathetic.

I don't know how much of a draw it will have on CBS. I think most of those that are interested in it have either gotten CBS All Access or they've waited for the DVDs. But CBS needs to fill their fall schedule with something.

I liked Discovery. Season 1 could have done with slightly fewer extended Klingon dialogue scenes, but the whole Lorca arc was very entertaining.

Here in the UK, the BBC has just bought Battlestar Galactica (the 2004-2009 one, not the upcoming Peacock version) to run as a boxset on iPlayer, and Saturday nights on BBC2 and I think that's a smart buy. Easily some of the best SF in the last 20 years but relatively hidden away in the UK.

I didn't hate S1 of Discovery as much as some (or, if I'm honest, as much as I expected to), but I definitely had issues with the new-look Klingons.  The Lorca stuff left me a little flat, and I felt like S1 of a new series was a bit early to dive into the Trek canon well and visit the mirror universe.  (As an aside, I almost rewrote that last sentence to add spoiler protection, but...it's been 2 years, folks.  There's a limit.)

Personally, I wish CBS were broadcasting S2, which felt more like original-recipe Trek to me (even if the [shady big bad McGuffin] is a little too omnipresent). Plus, I really love what they did with the Disco-Enterprise.

Having watched season two recently, Pike is a better central character than a mid-level officer, and I hope the new series set around his Enterprise will be better than Discovery.

As an aside, Lower Decks is better than I thought it would be, but not what I wanted it to be.
