Last Call with Carson Daly is finally coming to an end

I'm all for the snark about Carson "I am a complete tool" Daly (tm Jimmy F).  I mean, it's so much easier for him to host a show when he doesn't have to be in the same place to produce it. 

But I will note that Last Call has made a point to showcase musical acts much more than other late night programs.  In it's current iteration, there are typically two songs from a lesser known act.  For a 30 minute show that's big.  Sure, they can do it because they just tape the act when it comes through LA or NYC and broadcast it later.  With Conan now music act free, and at least Colbert not doing a music act every night, I will miss this part of the show.

Should NBC want to continue broadcasting in that spot, they might consider Jameela Jamil, known to US readers from her role on The Good Place.  She's had a recurring segment on the program these last few months.

In the snark I was thinking more along the lines of "Carson Daly still has a show?'

Any heat a show airing at that hour is going to generate is going to come from later viewings on YouTube. The network might want to keep a show in that slot to sell commercial time but it wouldn't surprise me if they turned it over to the stations for reruns or infomercials. When one of the Later hosts left NBC put SCTV reruns in the slot and they drew the same ratings as new Later shows.

As for finding new music, when Letterman announced he was ending his show, one thing I realized was that was the only place I heard new musicians and bands. I got out of the habit of watching late night shows daily and radio playlists have become so short that I'm not going to discover new music there.

As far back as the ‘90s when I was an NBC Page, I was lobbying hard for NBC to transform the post-Late Night time slot into a place to broadcast experimental programming. As South Park was a pop culture hit at the time, NBC lamented their prime time lineup had no room for edgy programming. Then as now, I think 1:30am would be a great place to try new things. But new things scare networks, so they’ll find another white guy to wear a suit and host a cookie cutter show.

If you're trying to do something a bit different these days, don't you just skip broadcast altogether and do it online? I don't know if NBC or any of the other networks do anything online only that isn't behind a paywall, but surely that would be the way to go? 

It's far from perfect, but the BBC closed down the linear youth oriented channel BBC 3 and made it online only. Some stuff does get an outing on regular TV in a later slot, but much of it exists online only. You're not stuck just trying to fill a 30 or 60 minute slot. And frankly you can do much edgier material. Plus it can be a great way to keep hold of talent who might otherwise head off somewhere else. 

Experiment quickly and cheaply, and it could well end up paying dividends down the line. Just make it fully accessible - ie don't require a cable login or whatever.

Last episode of Daly’s show is tonight. And looking at my Facebook and Instagram feeds, apparently I knew several people who worked on Last Call... and have never mentioned it on their social media until today.
