Last night I watched the NBC News Channel’s coverage of fireworks from around the world. I did so because I have reached the age where staying awake until midnight is no longer a goal but a failing, but I wanted to ring in the new year. Unfortunately, nobody told AI to be on the lookout for foreign languages during the broadcast, which resulted an unintentionally comedic broadcast. I refuse to believe in the future predicted by “The Terminator” if AI can’t even decipher an Edith Piaf song.

Credit to Dubai for having the best display of the evening:

I did manage to stay awake to watch the west coast feed of CNN’s coverage of the Times Square ball drop. Never again. Ten minutes of Anderson Cooper cackling was almost unbearable.

I'm baffled that anyone would watch Cohen and Cooper with the sound on unless they were being held at gunpoint. The former strikes me as just a dick without any social skills and the latter seems like a clueless sap. I tuned in to watch the ball drop, but had to mute within ten seconds.

It's no wonder that CNN's ratings are cratering if this its idea of good programming.

Like Kevin we celebrate New Years in East Coast time ( we have 2 children in NYC, and we are old). Like Dave we tuned into CNN to watch the ball drop, and were appalled at the Andy and Anderson show. Wish I had thought to mute it.

At least Cohen and Cooper intentionally shut up for the five minutes before and after midnight.

They let “Imagine” play uninterrupted (although it should always be the original) while Seacrest yammered on about something then went to commercial.

At least when I worked there, Dick Clark wasn’t willing to pay the music licensing fee for Imagine, so ABC would either cut away to commercial or to “Famous Face” himself babbling about the live color television magic.

I'd like to propose a moratorium on both "Imagine" and "Hallelujah."

I didn’t know that they still had to pay for the performance even though it was “natural sound” and not an introduced performance.

The only exception being if it’s the original and it’s Times Square. John Lennon was a part of New York.

It’s a singer on a stage with multiple cameras.

Yoko is a shrewd businesswoman. She’s not giving that away for free. At least, not if someone else is going to profit from it.
