This exact premise, that of a female private detective in 19th century London, was tried a few years ago with Billie Piper as the lead. As much as I like Piper, this series is much better written, dark but not too dark.

On PBS and iTunes...

Finished this series, and I enjoyed it. Lots of familiar tropes played out in original ways. I was reminded of Robert B Parker’s Spenser, inasmuch as they create a full universe of nicely developed characters who recur from time to time, sometimes as prominent pieces to the story, other times just to offer up fun character moments. And there is something refreshing in a series about a detective who ACTUALLY detects. Miss Scarlet investigates, unearths clues, and solves mysteries... in a lot of detective shows these days, the answers are just sort of stumbled upon, and while that does still occur in this series, Miss Scarlet also works to piece the puzzles together.
