Freeform gains nonexclusive linear-TV rights to the series beginning in 2022... ViacomCBS shares those rights through 2025.  Fan-fave and cast-fave mara-WANNA? slated for New Year's Day.

It streams for free any episode, any time, any day on the Peacock app. How can there be any value in “linear” syndication?

Not totally true: seasons 6 through 9 require the paid $ub$cription. And, there are still app-phobic people who prefer a TV remote.     B

Freeform's original programming seems to me aimed at a similar teen and twenty-something audience that (for whatever reason) has discovered The Office.  I can see the value for them.  I doubt it's bringing in the same money as a streaming deal.

I put this in the same category as non-premium cable networks airing movies or doing marathons of shows.  Sure, they're on DVD/Blu-Ray/etc, and probably streaming somewhere.  But if someone's looking for something to watch on the TV, and they see a movie they like, some people will watch through the edits and the commercials rather than get out their disc or switch to the streaming app.  Presumably that's enough in some quarters to make purchasing the rights a value proposition.

Similarly, if someone's watching a Freeform original, and The Office comes on next, I bet Freeform is gambling that enough people will stay on their channel to make the rights fee worth it.

But the audience still gets chased away at 11 p.m. Eastern when Pat Robertson or his son comes on--nowadays, they tell people at 11 p.m. onair to go online or on the app until regular Freeform programming resumes at midnight, which shows how much Disney loves being forced to air "The 700 Club" three times a day.
