Something's way hinky about this, Rock and the Smiths have history I'm unaware of.

Staged, maybe?

Almost certainly not staged. We were in text contact with people inside who said it was deadly quiet. Denzel had to talk Smith down during commercial break.

Jada has alopecia,a NDT has talked about how difficult it has been, so it was kind of a Dick move to joke about it. But Smith’s reaction was over the top, and technically criminal.

There is history here, some years ago Rock joked about Jada calling for an “Oscars so White” boycott (I think the punchline was something to do with Will. It getting nominated for “Concussion”). Jada was not pleased.

I’ve reached out to Chris Rock on Twitter, offering myself – a “son of a bald” sufferer with a self-described Mr-T-photo-negative head – as a replacement focus. (I’ve also asked for exclusive use of Parkinson’s jokes on Dad, but my wheelchair-bound brother is on his own. Thanks, ADA!)

The moment was an almost perfect physical enactment of so-called cancel culture. Rock’s joke was A) Mean-spirited and B) kind of hack, and not that funny. But instead of waiting to make a statement in an interview, or even address it in what was almost certainly going to be his Best Actor Acceptance Speech, Smith literally shuts his mouth. Rock was a Dick, but Smith was an asshole, and his “Love will make you do crazy things” line in his Acceptance speech did not rehabilitate him in my eyes.

It was also interesting to me that Smith used the character he was playing, Richard Smith, as an excuse for his behavior. People didn’t just say Richard was crazy, he really was crazy, and while he was also something of a savant, that did not erase his assholitry.

All that said, after Denzel (I did see all the nominated best actors, and never saw a performance that has stayed with me longer than his Macbeth) Smith was most deserving of his Oscar.

This will make for interesting viewing this weekend on the comedy shows, as both Michael Che – who announced this weekend that he’s stepping down from the “Update” desk at the end of the season – and the collie buggerer on HBO are known for their disgust about  the PC-ness in comedy these days.

Meanwhile, the British are like, “Can Jimmy Carr host next year? Or at least present?”

The punchline was The Wild Wild West. From six years ago:

Well, he referenced both. The initial joke was something like: “Jada’s mad because her man was not nominated for Concussion” the kicker was something like “that’s not fair, but also not fair he got paid $20M for WWW.”

As I fell asleep last night I was wondering if part of the fuel for Smith’s explosion was from earlier in the night. Regina Hall (in what seemed to me to be an overly long, obvious and cringy bit) 1st called up Javier Braden to join a group of single attractive men she was going to take back stage and administer a personal COVID test too (because women get hornet too, I get it) but then changes her mind because he is happily married to his wife Penelope Cruz, who is sitting next to him. She then calls on Will Smith, and says it’s okay because even though he is married and his wife is there, Jada has signed off on it. This a reference to their much discussed open marriage. Smith laughed but very demonstrably refused to join the bachelors on stage.

Later, after the Slap, Smith seems to be referring to having to deal with being attacked if you are a celebrity, which does not quite fit with the narrative of defending his wife for being made fun of for a medical condition, but does fit more with the soap opera that gets dissected constantly in the tabloids about his marriage and family.

Comedy shows this weekend--hell, what about tonight!  Comcast is still running the generic description for Colbert for tonight, but I assume with the NCAA into the Elite Eight he will be back.  Kimmel is probably wishing that he was on last night in the post-Oscars slot instead of the "Idol" clip show.

Can’t help but think that all these shows have writers… multiple writers. And producers… multiple producers. They all approved the joke. The sacred “Academy” approved the joke. Is Will Smith going to slap all of them, too? Will he also slap hundred for initially laughing at the joke?

So, it’s not clear to me that this “joke” went through that process. Rock seemed to have been given a few minutes to do some material before he announced the Documentary Award (already odd, since the show started with probably two too many comics as hosts). I doubt Rock was doing jokes written by show staff writers. During the first commercial break reports came out that the show Producers had released a statement that the interaction between Smith and Rock did not happen in rehearsal, which was their way of saying it was a real slap at a time when for many it still was not clear. But that does suggest that at least Rock did go through some sort of walk through or rehearsal the day before.

I would like to find out if Rock had pre-written that GI Jane 2 joke in advance (cleared or not at the rehearsal), because it seemed to me that it was a more or less spontaneous riff he came up with in the moment, I suspect to strike the next (small) blow in what had been a bit of an ongoing feud. If true, this mitigates the crime IMO, as it makes it more likely he did not know or think about the Alopecia or Jada’s reflections on how emotionally painful it had been. Perhaps  he saw her when he came out, assumed it was a fashion statement, and hit her with what otherwise would be a minor blow. The first time Smith tells him to get Jada name out of his mouth (an unfortunate idiomatic choice, judging by the nasty jokes on my Twitter feed) Rock says: “it was just a GI Jane joke!”, and then appears to be about to add something before he thinks better of it. I imagined he was going to say something like: “Shit, if I I knew I was going to get slapped anyway I would have told one of my real jokes about her.”

If he actually wrote the joke in advance, did it at rehearsal, had it cleared by what was widely and proudly referred to as the first Black production team in Oscar history, and nobody noticed or cared about the reason for her baldness, then the Dickish rating on the joke goes way up.

I have not worked the Oscars, but I’ve worked nearly every other awards show, and been in or around the writers room for those. True, a comic might submit a joke or two if he/she is presenting, but it is rare and extremely rare that a joke is not rehearsed multiple times before the live show. I’ll reach out to Bruce Vilanch on his Facebook, as he has years of direct experience in those writers rooms. But I would say at the very least there was collaboration between the room and Rock.

Not everybody uses dark humor like that, but to those who can’t take a joke, lighten the f*ck up. This wasn’t a “bald people are stupid” joke or a “bald people are the problem” joke. Your friend Bruce Vilanch is quoted in the NYT:

“And Bruce Vilanch, a past head writer of Oscars shows who did not work on this year's, said: “Everything that is in the script is vetted. But if a comedian comes out onstage and ad-libs something, there’s no time to vet. I’m guessing that’s what happened last night. What I’m hearing from everybody is that this was not the material that was rehearsed.”

The apology is pretty good. It would have been better if given during his acceptance speech last night*. He huddled with his PR advisor,  to clear if she tried to get him to do this and failed, or encouraged him to try to justify himself.

Even if he doesn’t mean it, it could be helpful in shutting down an unfortunately large fraction (I hope still minor) of folks, many African American, who are insisting respect for Black women required a violent response.

*The more I think about it though, the more I think they should have asked Smith to exit the Hall during that first commercial break, stashed him in a back room, had the Director of the film accept his Oscar and give it to him. I don’t blame them for not doing it, they had little time to think and lots if factors to weigh. But it would have deprived him of the platform to justify himself, provided some real penalty, and, most important, ensured no further violence. It’s not impossible he could have hit someone else, or spied Rock in the wings and gone after him.

So Matt Belloni is reporting that Rock did not know about the Alopecia. Combined with the report that the GI Jane joke was not in the script, Rock starts to look better and better. Maybe still nicer and smarter not to make a joke about a woman’s personal appearance, but not a case of knowingly making a joke about her medical condition. So Rock is genuinely confused by Smith’s overreaction.

Belloni also reports that there actually were discussions about removing Smith from the Hall during the commercial break, but they couldn’t make a decision, in large part worried about the optics if he refused to go willingly and they had images of white security guards dragging the biggest Black movie star out of the building. And what would Denzel and Tyler Perry have done?

Suffice it to say, there's a lot going on under the surface here.

Not only do we have this: https://people.com/style/jada-pinkett-smith-dont-give-2-craps-what-people-think-of-bald-head-before-2022-oscars/, I also read a long and informative Twitter thread this morning examining how slapping is a long-time Scientology technique used to maintain pecking order and discipline. Cruise doesn't go that far, but substitutes screaming and freezing out people.

Let's not let this shitshow distract us from the bigger message of the show: it was probably the worst Oscarcast in history, with truly terrible writing, the most inappropriate death reel imaginable (complete with a tribute to Betty White, whose cinematic legacy will last a lifetime), and Schumer in a Spider-Man suit and Hall feeling up actors substituting for virtually any mention of the honorary Oscars* and craft awards.

(*Squeezing those mentions into ten seconds at the ass-end of the show does not count.)

My only hope is that, in spite of the increased (though still crappy) ratings, this might be the beginning of the end for this idiotic spectacle.

Granting the fact I have no inside knowledge of this bizarre family, Jada seems desperate to distance herself from any responsibility for the incident, concocting not just one excuse but a phalanx of excuses and justifications. Were it not for the cameras pointed at her at the time, I suspect she’d deny even being in the room when it took place. When the Fresh Prince was the golden child who could do no wrong, she had no problem aligning herself with him. But now she’s hoping that by distancing herself from him, she will defray any blame for the night’s stupidity.

Me thinks she doth protesteth too much.

Mrs. Smith is scheduled to appear with Colbert as part of her image rehabilitation campaign this week.

I'll recommend everyone take a pass on that and check out Jon Batiste's return to The Late Show on Thursday.

We’ll have to take a longer pass - Stephen is down with the (COVID) sickness, so he’s Zooming from home.

That didn't stop him from interviewing Ms. Smith. It's presumably available wherever you find your Late Show videos.

As it turned out, it looked like both Smith and the other guest, standup Ricky Velez, were at the Ed last night (but in the broom closet used during COVID), I assume meaning that the changes were made on very short notice. I also assume that Velez was to have done a standup set, but instead did a bit in which he tried to take over the show with surprise guest Pete Davidson, after which they went to an interview where I assume Velez tried to go to his act.

I guess that a guest host for the rest of the week is out of the question, if only to allow the audience members who got their tickets to come.

And, to confuse the issue further, Tuesday's Late Show was a rerun. (It most likely depends on Colbert's day-to-day health.)

A message from Stephen: Sorry to say, per doctor’s orders, I’m going to be out for the rest of the week. Resting up so that I can deliver the hand crafted, artisanal talk show that we so enjoy serving you. In the meantime, a heady blend of Paxlovid and onions in my socks (thank you, Fallon) will be rebuilding my immune system.

Lol. The Onions in Socks is a reference to one of the Strikeforce Five episodes where Fallon described using onions in his socks to stop a cough.
