Rachel signed a mega deal with Comcast that gives her $30M/Year through after 2024 election to do lots of different things on their family of networks, but gives her the option to stop anchoring her MSNBC tent pole show at 9:00 pm. Insiders say she is sure to exercise the option, which is a crisis for MSNBC. Word is Nicole Wallace has the inside track on taking her place.

I like Nicole a lot. She is smart, an excellent communicator, warm, decent and telegenic. She is arguably a better broadcaster than Maddow. But her elevation to the top spot at MSNBC continues and maybe accelerates a dangerous trend in the Post-Trump world of repositioning moderate conservatives as liberals. That’s probably not a reason to deny her the job, and I can’t really think of anyone who would be better (I like Ari, but not enough other people do) and the fact that she is not Joy Reid is a huge plus. If only Keith Olbermann was like 18% less unstable…

One of the biggest canards in American media coverage is that MSNBC is liberal. Yes, Maddow is liberal (if too chatty on her own show for my tastes), Hayes is liberal, and Reid is liberal. That leaves 21 hours a day for Republicans like Wallace (whom I generally like) and Morning Joe, moderates like O'Donnell and Williams, and incompetents like Andrea Mitchell and (worst of all) Chuck Todd.

If MSNBC were as liberal as Fox is batshit-crazy right, they'd have to bring on Angela Davis to anchor things from the right.

One of the biggest canards in media is people think the political bias is the biggest problem plaguing MSNBC. In reality, it is the prevalence of personality driven shows that purport to be news programs, when in reality they are poorly produced forums for rumor, gossip, and stupidity. Maddow is among the worst, pandering and schticky, with undeserved arrogance and overblown righteousness. There’s no saving it; better to flush the whole network and start from scratch.

Same could be said for all cable news, but manufactured outrage is the new drug, the new vice, the new product pushing.

Agreed, but I think CNN has a basic infrastructure underneath all the bloviating which makes it possible to reform. I don’t see evidence of that at MSNBC.
