The "mixed-ish" star's role hasn't been revealed, and he may not be the only addition.

Yes, he'll play a Special Agent,  but a source told V. he's not replacing Gibbs... and I was right, Katrina Law (Agent Knight) also to become a regular.

Harmon's turning 70 on his next birthday. Isn't he allowed to retire? (Speaking of which, actual NCIS special agents face mandatory retirement at 57.)

I assume actual NCIS agents also don’t whack subordinates on the back of their head. Reality has no place in the land of NCIS.

Cole is only 5 years younger than Harmon.  The age of the actors is obviously not a primary consideration.

and here we go…

As the name of the link implies, last night Harmon exited NCIS as the top name on the call sheet. Watching this season has been a genuine struggle for me, because the series has dropped in quality in nearly every perceptible way. The actors might as well mug to the camera like Jim from The Office. As for Gary Cole, I look forward to him strolling past McGee’s desk sipping a cup of coffee and saying, “Yeah, if you could just come in early tomorrow and catch the murderer, that’d be great, ok?”

Your consideration is noted, but Variety and TV Line blasted this news about one nanosecond after the show aired in the Eastern and Central time zones. I guess the folks in the other two time zones have just had to learn to avoid the Internet during ET prime time.

I thought that last episode was weak in every way, including the very strange change of heart of the GaryCole character in the last segment.  It remains to be seen if the show can maintain its high ratings w/o Harmon and with the new lead.

Not limited to NCIS, a lot of long running shows keep their audiences out of habit. Their loyal viewers have the season set to record or even it's Tuesday at 8/Monday at 9 and my show's on. Unless there's a major shift in tone they'll just keep watching.
