I mean, of course I am going to listen, but — and a say this as a fanatical fan who prays that her cancer diagnosis is not, in fact, terminal — there is an element of cringe to the first two episodes.
The first episode featured no guest, just Shannen Doherty unfiltered. And if we are honest with ourselves, don’t we all need a filter? A few years ago, I tried to continue with my own podcast after two members of my family passed away. I was emotionally scarred, and thankfully I accidentally erased the introduction I had recorded where I poured out my emotions, openly wept, and was inconsolable with grief and anger. I bring this up because Shannen has reportedly been diagnosed with stage 4 inoperable cancer, and her emotions were understandably raw on her debut episode, and upon sober reflection one might regret things said under those conditions.
Which brings us to episode two, aka the Shannen we all know. Her guest was one of her Charmed co-stars, and they are clearly friends… but. Maybe you have one of these sorts of friends in your life, the kind who somehow manages to lift you up while simultaneously knocking you down by taking credit for your accomplishments? From Shannen’s perspective, Holly was a mess when they first met and was only saved by the grace of Shannen, and Holly had no chance of getting cast in Charmed and only got the role because of Shannen. And while there might be elements of truth in that, I don’t know if that’s how I’d publicly present a friend of mine under similar circumstances. And if I was the friend in question, I don’t know if I’d appreciate being represented that way.
All that being said, Shannen would be a good podcast guest for a host who can manage an interview/conversation. But unless Shannen gets a sidekick or cohost or producer who can steer her away from the cringe, this is going to be tougher for me to sit through than the 90210 reboot.
