Some of them are allegedly benching themselves this week while Dave Chappelle hosts.

While I agree with the sentiment (Chappelle should be out of bounds for an inclusive show), it’s not really a boycott if nobody publicly stands up against him. I can take into account some union provisions if the writers are in the WGA, but in general it’s not at all effective if nobody will say if they’re refusing to participate and why.

Also, it's not as though the alleged objections weren't possible the last two times Chappelle guest-hosted.

My snap response last week was, “He’s going to preach at us” – a logical progression from 2016 (preaching for us: “Give him a chance”) and 2020 (preaching to us: “Be a gracious winner”).

So, “I’m right, you’re wrong”…?

Q: How do you know the writers walked out?

A: The show’s funny.

I’m not sure there ever was a boycott being called of the show by writers (a boycott is more than one writer posting an Instagram condemnation of Transphobia).

I would accuse SNL of chasing controversy for ratings if they had not already established a mini tradition of booking Chappelle after national elections in the Trump era. I can defend booking him. I can’t defend his mostly self serving and cowardly presentation on the show, which was so many miles away from the ruthlessly honest and courageous self examination we used to see in his comedy.

I guess we are supposed to be grateful he did not do his Trans-bashing Schtick, but I found his monologue not exactly offensive (though if Joe Rogan hosts during Black History Month and parallels Chappelle’s comments about Jews with a similar act about “The Blacks” I think you would hear a little more outrage), but disappointing.

The essence of Chapelles current, distasteful self creation was contained in his remarks about West losing money because if his latest round of statements. If you want to defend his antisemitism have the balls to do it, but don’t pretend that Kanye West, still very wealthy and with a powerful platform, is somehow the victim of a Jewish power structure. That’s as plausible as Chappelle’s pose as the the victim of a powerful Transgender Community, even though he is one of the wealthiest and most powerful comics in the world, and most Trans people are economically and socially marginalized, and trans women of color are literally being hunted down and killed at record levels. Chappelle is a bully pretending to be bullied; he’s like a white comic in the 1950s making fun of southern Blacks getting lynched, then whining when he gets a little criticism for it.

The show was better than average, as it usually is when they have a first class comic on (before we knew what an asshole he was Louis CK led to a above average SNL episodes also; I suppose we can expect to see him hosting later this year.

Television producer Jonathan Goldman seemed to think the opposite, tweeting: “Dave Chappelle has offended everyone in his career bc it’s his job, to address the uncomfortable. There’s a diff btwn bigotry and social commentary. It’s not for the faint of heart but if we’re gonna survive, we have to understand nuance. Last night was Carlin level s---.”

Sorry, but comparing Chappelle's material to Carlin's, now THAT'S offensive.
