The big festival in Austin won’t be occurring due to fears all the people will be too drunk or too stoned to remember to wash their hands.

Ultra music fest (EDM) in Miami has been cancelled.

Many people planned to go to Coachella are waiting for a decision.

We got a notification tonight that the Mayor of San Francisco has shut down all non-essential gatherings of more than 50 people in city-owned buildings for the next two weeks. That means at least one theatre company had to cancel shows, not to mention the Ballet, the Opera, and the Symphony. My show isn't affected--so far--but we're waiting to see how things develop.

Doug Eastick, to Kevin, Fri. (3/06):

Billboard (the full article is paywalled) noted "Most event insurance policies don't cover pandemic diseases like the coronavirus, meaning it's better for promoters to get shut down than do it themselves."

The thing about Coachella that is different from many other big open events is its proximity to nothing. Having been down there during the festival a couple years ago, I noted then that the locals, for the most part, don’t like the big crowds that clog the roads to the desert... they aren’t beneficial for the local economy. Other events like Mod Week make money for the locals. It isn’t Austin which counts on the money that SXSW brings in.

Kevin - your original post was a bit overly dismissive of both who attends SXSW and the festival itself. SXSW is more than just a music festival - there’s also the film festival, interactive conference and education conference, which all precede music and are largely attended by professionals in those industries*. Trust me when I tell you that IA attendees my get their drink on, but they’re also very mindful of personal grooming and conference etiquette.

* I attended interactive for 9 years while with my previous employer, as at that time the education panels fell under IA.

Not my intention to be dismissive. Lately, SXSW rivals Comic-Con in defining and capitalizing on pop culture. I am however admittedly dismissive about Coachella, or really anything that occurs in the desert. Oh, yeah, three Coronavirus cases in the Coachella Valley, so I think it is safe to say that at the very least that event is getting rescheduled.

Also, rumors on the Twitterverse that both Wheel of Fortune and the Jeopardy are going to be taped without studio audiences. Given Alex Trebek’s age and health, I wouldn’t blame them.

It's more than a Twitter rumor -- Variety got a source (albeit an anonymous one) to confirm:

Protecting the audience, sure, but protecting Alex? He's much too far away from them to be at risk. Unless he does a lot of pressing the flesh at a taping?

Speaking of which - last night, probably for the first time since early in his CBS run, Colbert did not run out and give everyone in his front row a high five.
(Last week he did the high fives, then had someone toss him a bottle of Purell.)
Yet another indication that the world is changing.

There was also no pre monologue embrace with Jon Batiste, or any physical contact with the musical guests.

Trebek meets and takes photos with the contestants and takes questions during the breaks (if it's a new one or something he's interested in, he's great; if it's something he's been asked a million times ["Do you really know all the answers?"], he can be a dick. That said, I'd imagine that, by now, his immune system is so compromised (count how many "colds" he's had this season), there's no reason to take any chances.

But it will allow jurors to view the films they'll be voting on. The awards will be announced 3/24.
