They did some “rockumentaries” in the ‘80s and ‘90s, and some “Rock the Vote” town halls that probably got Bill Clinton elected. I remember during the LA riots when local news failed us (they just chased down things on fire or places being looted, but never bothered to talk to anybody on the street), MTV News did a better than average job putting the racially charged event in context and making it relevant to my generation (I was MTV’s target audience at the time).
The National Lampoon special “MTV Give Me Back My Life” got most of the MTV on air talent from that era to poke fun at themselves, including the news team. It’s on YouTube and worth a watch if you haven’t seen it.
