Besides the obvious question of can this story be told in today's context, there's also the other one, who takes over for Bea Arthur...  “It’s exciting to imagine what somebody else will make of that character. It’s opening a new door and that’s exciting.”

I could see Sarah Silverman or Jameela Jamil playing with the role of Maude

I don’t see that as an obvious or even necessary question. The original aired just before Roe, this would air just after. Seems like a pretty similar context. And really that episode would have been controversial at anytime in between, considering how rarely mainstream TV characters get abortions. I have just been doing a re-watch of Veep (for the 4th time) and appreciated that they did it.

Would like to see a list of ten most prominent TV show characters to get an abortion (not with an abortion as part of their backstory, but getting an abortion after getting pregnant during the show). Are there even ten?

There was a very serious in tone episode of Spenser For Hire where he and his longtime love Susan deal with abortion.

Would Cecily Strong be too young?  And would Lorne let her work for another network?

Well, she did do a show produced by Lorne and Universal for Apple TV+, but...

Arthur was 53 playing 47 yo Maude (6 year difference). Strong is 38, so would be 9 years younger. Pretty close. But since a big part of her reasoning for the abortion (as I recall) is her age, they would have to age her.

Rosie O’Donnell is 60, maybe too old.
