Dead at 88. I’m going to go ahead and give him his own thread here, not just because he was the biggest star in the early phase of the NBA’s television history, but because he was a high impact Analyst for, as I recall, both ABC and CBS’s coverage of the NBA in the 70s. He was much maligned in some quarters in that role, but if I, a tied in the purple and gold fanatic, could appreciate him, I think he was doing something right.

Also, of course, one of the most courageous and effective of civil and human rights fighters produced by professional sports.

He also did a funny turn as the sidekick/Oddjob to bad guy Ricardo Montalban on a 1968 episode of "It Takes a Thief."

Heck, he even hosted SNL! He was The Black Shadow!

Russell also did some commercials for AT&T Long Distance in the early '70s. Here's one.
