There's a online petition for LaVar Burton and he has tweeted that he covets the job.

I'm sure the show had a succession plan in place once they knew about Trebek's cancer, and that they're waiting a respectful amount of time before announcing it and resuming taping. So as much fun as it may be to speculate or sign petitions, it's even less meaningful than usual.

Burton strikes me as a terrible choice; one that I assume is driven by Gen Xers who remember him from Reading Rainbow.

While I think either a woman or a POC would be a great idea, I don't think he's the one.

At 63, Burton is too old. I highly doubt they'll pick someone over 50. They want someone who can last for decades, the way Trebek did.

Alex was 44 when he took over Jeopardy. At TPIR, Barker was 48 and Carey was 49.

He may not want the job. He lives in Seattle and does a twice a week podcast with John Roderick. Under those circumstances it would be very disruptive to take on hosting duties for a game show in LA.

In theory, he'd only have to go to L.A. twice a month, for a couple days at a time, for tapings -- and he's already shown that he's more than willing to go to L.A. for game show tapings (just this month, he's done both "Master Minds" and "The Chase"). Of course, the producers might be hoping for someone who's willing to put more time into it than that (promotional appearances, etc.).

I think Ken has a better chance of thinking it will fit into his schedule than George Stephanopolous or Anderson Cooper. 40-odd taping days a year plus promotional appearances isn't really a full time job, but it's a pretty serious commitment when you add in a cross-country commute to get there, plus whatever money or resources would be required for substitute anchors or broadcasts from the LA bureau for days/weeks at a time.

Jennings also recently joined the show as a consulting producer, so it conceivably could be even easier.
