(Backstory: in the NFC title game in January, down eight, the Packers inexplicably decided to kick a field goal with 2:05 to go in the fourth quarter, only to never get the ball back. This brought fury from Packers fans, who wondered why the (expletive) you wouldn't have one of the great QBs in the NFL try to get the TD and the two-point conversion.)

Hilarious moment.
Unfortunately, the only good moment of the show. 
Aaron Rodgers is not good at talking on television. He spoke in a sleep-inducing monotone. 
But I'll give him this: On the football-players-hosting-game-shows scale, he ranks above Rolf Benirschke.

I know College Bowl was a non-televised thing when I was in college.

The DC area has televised a high-school level equivalent, It's Academic, forever.  Between that and my own college level experience, I don't think it makes the greatest television.  Hopefully Peyton is less Nationwide Peyton and more like he seems to be on his ESPN show.

First off, that video is in *really good* quality for 1966.

Second, I'd wager the It's Academic production budget is comparable to the College Bowl production budget, *maybe* adjusted for inflation.

Earle is certainly capable, if squarely of the era.

And the 1966 game would have shook me.

I’m not sure what the initial source of that “College Bowl” video comes from.

But (speaking of Allen Ludden), something comparable from the same year, the 1966-67 season of “Password” also exists in surprisingly good condition. Goodson-Todman kept them (slightly edited) for the purpose of selling them as syndicated reruns.

And BUZZR airs them every weekday at 2 p.m. ET with some more slight cutting (the first commercial break cut out so that they go right from the intros to the game--it is often noticeable), Lee Vines reintroducing Ludden after the station break).

Speaking of announcers, i assume that Lee Vines was a CBS staff guy, much like Don Pardo was at NBC. Jack Clark did Password too, but i know him better as announcer for "Wheel of Fortune." Always was great with loads of copy he had to read each day. Was Vines ever considered by Goodson for "Price is Right" before they went with Johnny Olsen?

I meant to write this personally and it would have been more timely then: it's not fair to judge a host after their first show. The nerves and insecurity are going to show. If he doesn't loosen up by the end of the week you have a point.

One thing I hadn't thought of until I heard Rodgers on the Pat McAfee Show is that the guest host period also serves as training for the staff. They have spent all those years with the personality and idiosyncrasies of Trebek that adapting to a new host will take an effort. Sitting in meetings and working to prepare a guest host every taping week gives them more flexibility and resilience. They'll have an easier time working with a new permanent host.

Something i noticed on Password then, was that Lee Vines would whisper the passwords for the home viewers. Back then(1966), my grandmother's viewing consisted of Let's Make a Deal, Password, The Doctors(soap opera), Another World and You Don't Say. And the legendary announcers then- Jay Stewart, Lee Vines, Mel Brandt, Bill Wolff and John Harlan.
