A very formulaic sitcom made slightly less awful through the sheer charisma of Brad Whitford as the cranky older guy. Seriously, if he can carry this hack premise past 13 episodes, he better be the first person to win an Oscar for a TV series.

I actually agree exactly with Kevin on this. It is notoriously difficult to judge a sitcom by its pilot, but the set up here was painfully by the numbers. I can’t think of any reason I would ever watch this show again, except I probably will watch at least a few more desperately hoping it gets better because Whitford.*

*Disclaimer: I watched every episode of both Studio 60 and The Good Guys

Big hole in the center of this premise: Either the pilot took place over a period of months, or the group doesn't need his help to begin with. And given the performance they put together while he was sulking in the houseboat, probably the latter.

Halfway through the episode I figured that the season would build up to the big competition. Then it happened at the end of the episode and we looked at each other and said “so where does this show go now?”

Sticking it out for now because Whitford, but I’m feeling skeptical...

Shameful Truth Time: after finishing the third episode (I think there is a 4th waiting for me in my DVR) I am  actually enjoying this show. I shouldn’t, because there is a lot wrong with it. It’s not just a liberal re-imagining of the rural South, but a sanitized whitewashing of the many real differences and problems that the show is trying to represent as transcendable. As such it is deeply disrespectful to all sides.

And what kind of Southern Christian Church has a choir that sings Queen anthems for worship service? This is only slightly less likely than that one of the few sacred songs it does sing is freaking Ave Maria. Somehow Bradley Whitford has stumbled into the only conservative Christian Church that is basically secular in its sensibilities, and is more ethnically diverse than a Brooklyn coffee house.

And yet, the cast actually is charming, and not just Whitford. And the underlying theme of dealing with grief gives it at least some substance, though this would be stronger if it grappled more honestly with implied issues of domestic violence, trauma, poverty and racism.

I don’t expect the show to survive past, or even maybe through, this year, but it looks like I will be watching however many episodes they decide to air....And I still have not watched Sunnyside.

My church’s choir rarely meets a quorum – there’ll be an occasional duet, if a parishioner requests it – but as pianist, I am given a wide berth when it comes to my choices for prelude/postlude music.

Queen hasn’t made it… yet.

And to sure, church musical directors are capable of many whimsical and surprising choices. But this choir seems to specialize in pop music, and almost never sings Protestant Hymns or gospel standards.
