I guess being described as “more of a hard-news reporter than a TV personality“ by Elle magazine is just about right for Curry. Even before we knew about Lauer, we knew he was a jerk, and Curry at her worst was just bland or unctuous, not assholic or creepy. So I get why 8 years later she is still asking “why did they fire me?”, and answering “I don’t know.” But still, at some level the Q and the A are disingenuous; either it’s obvious now she was fired because she pointed the finger at Lauer’s sexual misconduct, or because she did not have the star power to anchor the network’s biggest profit center (probably both).
I do wonder, why publish this article now? Both, why now, 8 years after the event, and some years after Lauer was outed, and why now, apparently 7 months after the interview it is based on, and 6 months after the author called her to get some pandemic perspective on their talk? Is Curry about to announce she has signed on with a major news outlet? Or is this trolling supposed interest in the story being rekindled by Emmy nominations for The Morning Show?
