The former counsel to News Corp., the chief lobbyist for Fox and the former head of network distribution for Fox (neither of whom worked for Fox News and all were involved in Fox's establishment) say that their efforts to bring an alternative television choice to America did not include mass disinformation:

One day they will write the definitive history of FoxNews, specifically how Roger Ailes felt betrayed by NBC when they dropped his America’s Talking (AT) network in favor of MSNBC, then concocted a rival network specifically to break not just MSNBC but also CNBC. For better or worse (it was for worse), Ailes succeeded

Yes, it did. From the beginning. 

The old guard at FN thought they had reasonable cover (they didn’t) for their distortions, and are now embarrassed that the newer generation stripped their cover and revealed their nakedness.
