Two hours after John Harwood appeared on CNN to say that President Biden was right last night, he tweeted that he is leaving the channel today after two years with the network and time with CNBC, the Tampa Bay Times, the Wall Street Journal and New York Times--he says he wants to figure out what's next:

Remember, Oliver's back on Sept. 11.

So, maybe Harwood has been planning to leave for sometime and today just happened to be when he announced it. Maybe Licht has been planning on dumping Harwood for the last few months and just got around to it today. But also maybe in Zaz-World, the price for journalists speaking the simple truth on air is their job. And even if it was one of the first two, the hole Licht has dug for himself is that given his priors, it is impossible not to suspect the third.

Without getting overly political, the backlash from last night’s speech has been farcical. Biden literally chanting “Vote! Vote! Vote!” equates to fascism according to the GOP. When referring to the wretchedness of the MAGA cult, Biden generously pointed out not all Republicans fell into that category… Republicans disagreed, essentially cementing the idea that anti-Trump = anti-Republican, which I don’t believe even Nixon supporters believed in the end. Biden pointed out the number of bipartisan legislation that has passed, not a record but a good amount, and the GOP says he’s unwilling to work with them on anything.

It is pure farce.

PS- I don’t know why the Marines were in the background, either… I also don’t care.

I noticed in Historian Heather Cox Richardson’s newsletter this evening (and I can’t think of a better source of analysis and context for daily events, I recommend it highly) that a source told Dan Froomkin at Press Watch ( link below) that Harwood had been told a month ago that he was being terminated at end of August ( despite a long term contact) and “ he used his last broadcast to send a message”

HCR also provided the transcript of Harwood’s analysis, which was:

“The core point he [Biden] made in that political speech about a threat to democracy is true.

“Now, that’s something that’s not easy for us, as journalists, to say. We’re brought up to believe there’s two different political parties with different points of view and we don’t take sides in honest disagreements between them. But that’s not what we’re talking about. These are not honest disagreements. The Republican Party right now is led by a dishonest demagogue.

“Many, many Republicans are rallying behind his lies about the 2020 election and other things as well. And a significant portion—or a sufficient portion—of the constituency that they’re leading attacked the Capitol on January 6th. Violently.

“By offering pardons or suggesting pardons for those people who violently attacked the Capitol, which you’ve been pointing out numerous times this morning, Donald Trump made Joe Biden’s point for him.”
