(Or, NBC Sports has no one else.)

He’ll start off in Beijing hosting the Olympics, then jet to LA for the Super Bowl.

What it tells me is that Michaels is as good as retired if NBC is willing to take a chance on a jet lagged Tirico.

My reading of this is that Tirico is flying in to host the marathon pre-game (and half time) Super Bowl shows. Presumably Michaels is still doing the okay by play?

Yeah I didn’t think to read the article. I always think of the Super Bowl pregame as a long infomercial and not worthy of a network’s top talent. NBC feels differently or Tirico doesn’t want to be shut out of association with the event even if it compromises his Olympic coverage.

Of course you are thinking of the Pre game show exactly right. But I guess that still is a lot of on air exposure for the Host.

Also, I’m not sure you are that wrong about Al. I would not be surprised if he announced after the SB that he was retiring (doubt he could make it to NBC’s next SB, so leaving now makes sense (though, I think NBC was pushed back to 2022, so maybe they have it again soon?)

Change in plans: he'll head for Connecticut after Monday's primetime, Maria Taylor will host Tuesday, he'll still host Wed. and Thurs. before going back to L.A.

The story notes: “ Tirico was originally scheduled to stay in Beijing through Thursday before going to Los Angeles. NBC officials, though, have reiterated that his schedule was subject to change based on COVID-19 and other factors.”

Everything I could find about this online is just the original AP report. Left unexplained is, was the change based on COVID or “other factors”?

Is the COVID exposure so bad there they were worried he would not be available for Super Bowl? Are they worried Putin is about to move on Ukraine, and travel might be disrupted? Did Tirico say something to piss off the Chinese and they want him out?

I would like to see Tirico and NBC stay harder on the hard news aspects of these games, but to be fair they have had several segments which have not pulled too many punches. It’s possible the Chinese freaked, but I would put my money on NBC not wanting to risk their plans for pre-Super Bowl marathon by exposing Tirico to COVID.
