Hollywood writer Nikki Finke dies

She was highly respected, but I lost faith because while writing for the Los Angeles Times she got busted also pending scripts to people she wrote about and did not disclose it.

Finke was of course frequently sourced and discussed on this list during her active period; my quick search of my gmail archives suggests from October of 2005 through June of 2014. I eventually found her incessant blaring of: “TOLDJA!” To be both obnoxious and a credibility-sapping self indulgence. Even so, there is no denying she broke lots of interesting content.

Just read Puck News’s Matt Bellini’s column on Finke. He was editor of the Hollywood Reporter during her reign at Deadline. He acknowledges many of her accomplishments, as noted in most obits today, but insists on balancing that with some ugly truths about her. Here is one of his summary paragraphs:

“None of that changes the fact that Nikki was a terrorist. A journalistic terrorist, sure, yet a terrorist nonetheless. She presented herself as a no-bullshit reporter who kept the Hollywood moguls honest, yet she perverted the profession by blackmailing sources, often targeting the weak, and weaponizing the internet to push her bile directly into our inboxes. Outsiders could never really see Nikki for what she was because they found her copy so irresistible. And, after all, Hollywood is such a silly place to begin with, who really cared if there was a woman wreaking havoc in the name of an executive promotion scoop.”
