Whilst perusing that same Poynter 'feed' whence came several reports today, I also found (by way of an excellent interview with Spike Lee... yes, he's not dead yet, and it's likely 'cuz he's not arrogant [link]) a WaPo Magazine postscript to the comedy troupe born in the early 80s from staffers for moderate Illinois US Sen. Charles Percy... blame COVID, natch...

I’m sure the fact they were uniformly unfunny had nothing to do with it.

Tom, I need a frame of reference here. Are we talking better, worse, or equivalent to Mark Russell?

Too hard to tell them apart.

I put them half a step below Russell, who was occasionally mildly amusing through random chance. The Steps were impressive in being consistently unfunny in violation of the laws of probability.

I used to rather enjoy Mark Russell although, to be honest, I was about 12 during his heyday in the mid-80s. The Capitol Steps couldn't clean Russell's novelty piano.

The Capitol Steps had been performing for years before I went to a show, two, in fact -- because a local HWCNBN fan's husband performed with the troupe.  So, I'm guessing that was in 2004 or 2005.

I'm pretty sure Russell was the entertainment at an event I went to, only I can't remember which one.  That's what happens when you get old.  He was an institution in the city for decades, so I'm glad I got to see him in person.
