Okay, the contestants in “Last Columbo Murderer Standing” (NBC only) are actually hanging in there pretty well. Last time I updated my list was May 4, 2011, at which time 13/40 were still alive (32.5%). As of today, about five and a half years later (November 12, 2016), we have only lost three more, and so are at 10/40 (25%).

I have added the ages of the surviving murders (range 75 – 90). Van Dyke is the oldest, and Trish Van Devere (“Make Me A Perfect Murder”, Season 7, episode 3, a pretty good one) is the youngest, so I guess she is the odds on favorite to win, though I don’t know her health status.

Neither of the pilot murderers are with us, but there is at least one murderer from each NBC season still standing.

I mostly used “The Ultimate Lieutenant Columbo Site” for the list of murderers, though I made a few of what I thought were needed corrections. There can be some ambiguity here (for instance, Richard Basehart (dead) and not Honor Blackman (alive) is listed as the murderer for “Dagger of the Mind”, Season 2, Episode 4 (Columbo in London), even though I might have listed them jointly. I used Wikipedia and “Dead or not Dead” for breathing status. Any corrections would be appreciated.

Below is the list of the 10 remaining contestants, followed by the list of what I have as all 40 unique murderers for the 7 seasons (plus two pilots) of the NBC episodes.

I'm fairly certain Robert Conrad is still alive, but I could be wrong. IMDB lists no death date

Good one. Dead or Alive has him at age 81 and alive. I may have used my own memory on that one

This isn't related to the Columbo dead pool, but fans of the murder-mystery type of series who haven't checked out BBC's Death In Paradise really should. Clever writing, brilliant acting, good assortment of guest-murderers (which is what made me think of it), and the two actresses cast as detective-sergeants throughout the run of the series might be the two most beautiful actresses on TV at the moment.

As Kevin pointed out, we have lost another Colombo Murder Ed with the death of Robert Conrad. I seem to have neglected to update my list with the previous passing of Martin Landau in 2017. So, since my last update in November of 2016 we have lost 2 of the then surviving 11 killers (for this purpose I have only be counting the NBC seasons). Now there are 9 left from the original 40 (22.5%). I don’t t know what fraction of television actors who had starring guest roles on prime time network shows in the 70s are still living, but this group seems to have done pretty well. mart money I guess is still on Trish or Susan, the only ones still in their 70’s, and both women likely to outlive men. Still, look at Dick Van Dyke go.

Recent deaths:
  • Robert Conrad (84) 2020

  • Martin Landau (89) 2017

Survivors:

1.     Susan Clark (79)

2. Vera Miles (90)

3.     Dick Van Dyke  (94)

4.     George Hamilton (80)

5.     Hector Elizondo (83)

6. William Shatner (88)

7.     Joyce Van Patten (85)

8.     Trish Van Devere (78)

9.     Clive Revill  (89)
