I’ve had the chance to have several private online conversations with Josh over the last few years, which started with my fandom of His West Wing podcast, but spread to a discussion of Israel and her neighbors. He can be something of a smart ass, but that covers a thoughtful and caring soul.

Here he does a much better job covering ground that Sarah Silverman trod so clumsily, as discussed on this list previously. Even so, there are ai think problems with his answer to the question: Why is Mel Gibson still working in Hollywood? Malina, drawing on an influential book, says it’s because Jews don’t matter. Yet he himself acknowledges this is contradicted by the fact that Gibson’s anti-semitism is closely approached if not matched by his racism and misogyny. Do Blacks and women also not matter?  

I Don’t think it’s that anti-semitism gets a pass in Hollywood; I think it is: 1) Gibson did spend significant time in the penalty box (If Harvey Weinstein lives long enough he would probably get another chance eventually) 2) Gibson has some influential friends in Hollywood, who have argued (unconvincingly to me) that his hateful comments are explained by alcohol abuse, not an ugly heart.
