I hope it isn’t too soon to comment about this here.

Just wanted to say what a delightful experience the Tournament of Champions was this year. Loved the format, loved Ken, and loved the spirit among all the competitors. Kind of had a Great British Bake Off vibe (though they did mention the prize money more than TGBBO would).

I also felt that the tournament did a good job of identifying plausibly the three best players from last season for the Final rounds, and ultimately the very best. Kudos to all involved.

I enjoyed watching, and don't begrudge Amy the win, but I was disappointed about the controversy that kept Sam from a possible win:

Like just about everyone I loved Sam. I also followed this thread as it erupted in real time on Twitter, but I was unmoved. While I agree that Paul did not write Hebrews, he most likely did not write several other books in the NT that are explicitly ascribed to him. I think the clear intent of the clue was which book commonly understood to be written by Paul had the most quotations. When I saw the clue in real time I told my wife “The question is Hebrews, even though it was not really written by Paul.”

With all due respect, this reminds me of the great sequence in Stand By Me where the prepubescent boys are arguing about who would win a fight between Superman and Mighty Mouse, and it is settled by the observation that Mighty Mouse if just a cartoon, while Superman is a real guy!

If you are Biblically literate enough to correctly identify the New Testament books from a random list of ancient demonyms, you should likely be aware that Hebrews’ status as a Pauline epistle is dubious at best. The writers including Paul in the clue rendered it vague. (Fwiw, I had Romans, but then, I’m just the church pianist.)

Right, I think that is the fair criticism of the clue; it was vague, in that there was more than one defendable right solution. But that is different than the Twitter indictment, which is that it was dead wrong, and should have been corrected, and Sam was robbed.

I also enjoyed the tournament. Some of that might come from the appearances of several all time champions. I also prefer the first to three wins over the two games total points.

One thing I didn’t get was Amy’s low wagers in Final on Thursday and Friday. It got explained on the podcast. Andrew had two wins and she was wagering to shut him out of a third win. If it meant that she’d lose to Sam it was okay with her since the tournament would continue and she’d get another chance.

They also addressed the Letter to the Hebrews. Sarah said the researchers ran it by a seminarian and got approval for it. She also said when they use the Bible in a category they always specify the King James Version where the chapter is called Paul’s Letter to the Hebrews. Of course in this clue they didn’t specify the KJV and that could make the clue ambiguous.

However, "Jeopardy!" has always used the King James Version as their Bible source unless otherwise stated--and this probably goes back to the Art Fleming days.
