I met Ms Carroll on one of the last TV shows I worked, and she couldn’t have been more gracious or elegant. I most recently caught her in her recurring role on White Collar, where she made the most of a minor role. Of course, her stint as a sitcom star will be what she’s most known for.

Sad news. I also met Ms. Carroll once, way back in the day, only a few years after Julia was done. Same; I was a middle teen, with my Dad, and she was so gracious and nice to both of us.

A criticism of her is that she didn't play an authentic black woman, instead playing a black Doris Day. This may not have helped in black communities, but it put a black person on TVs in a positive light (not Amos and Andy, for instance) in a lot of white homes for the first time, I think that was an important step for white culture.

That was a criticism made by some of the one sitcom character she played (Julia), but I never thought it valid. There are lots of black women, and Julia was a valid (60s TV) representation of one of them. A more legitimate criticism in my view was that the show had to be about her living in a white world, not about her in a black community.

The 'toob suggested a "Julia" episode posted this past spring, with a pre-"Brady" Susan Olsen... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z39R2JPuWsc (link)
