It’s so much that it was significantly funnier than previous installments this season (though I did laugh a few times), but the first new SNL episode of the calendar year did seem fresher and more innovative, and I appreciated that. A lot of this was simply being forced off the old Trump props they have been retreading for so long, but it also felt like they had brought in some new writers, or at least that the old writers had gotten some sleep.

It did feel like an extended commercial for the Peacock streaming service, as there was no other discernible reason for the Host (Jack Ryan presumably won’t show up for season 3 until the Fall at the earliest).

I still don’t understand why they wear masks at the end; they all hug and close talk, and the benefits of masking are significantly reduced without social distancing. I just got my second Moderna a few days ago, and they have drilled into us to continue masking and distancing even after the two week wait for full 94% protection. I guess it’s just the social learning (modeling), or that in the close they are near cast and crew they otherwise are not near during the show (and maybe those from different pods are not hugging and close talking).

My interpretation of the masks during the goodbyes is that their purpose is more to send a "mask up" message to the home viewers than anything else. (Similarly, in the "SNL" promo that was airing Thursday night -- with only John Krazinski, Heidi Gardner, and M.G. Kelly on the stage -- all three were masked. I'm not sure if they've been doing that for the promos all season.)

The best thing about this "SNL" was the deadpan line "Let's get to the most famous part of 'Supermarket Sweep,' the little quiz about grocery items" (which the studio audience had no reaction to, but I laughed very hard).

The most curious thing about this "SNL" was that they did a sketch about Subway and didn't refer to the scandal du jour, the lawsuit that was just filed claiming that there's no actual tuna in their tuna salad.

That was one of the times I laughed too.

When you're doing a paid promotion, it's not always smart to disparage the patron's product.

That said, I was surprised they didn't use the Supermarket Sweep sketch (which was exactly what one would expect when McKinnon is on screen--don't get me started on the cold open) as a plugging opportunity.

FWIW, "Jack Ryan" is an Amazon Prime original, not a Peacockening.

Correct. But Peacock has been hyping the Hell out of getting exclusive rights to The Office, and the Monologue was all about how much the only thing getting America through the pandemic has been streaming The Office.

Since Ryan is not due out any time soon, and he did not hype any other project, it left the impression that the reason they cast him as the Host was to push The Office on Peacock.

I had just assumed it was a make-good on his scheduled appearance from last March (PPD due to COVID lockdowns), at which point he would have been promoting A Quiet Place II.
