Keith Olbermann has managed to pump himself up with attention (which dude needs to live) this week, and then he exploded in agony and ecstasy all over Twitter yesterday. I link to the Variety Story here, though I judge the Puck News story to be probably more credible (in part because Keith himself says the Daily Beast story, more sympathetic to his side, is more accurate).
All agree KO and MSNBC CEO Jeff Shell have been engaged in extended email conversations about KO returning on his white horse to save MSNBC. The Daily Beast implies this was MSNBC desperation, first in the face of being out performed by CNN in all but non-Rachel hours, then facing loss of Brian Williams and Rachel herself. Puck News suggests this was mostly Olbermann desperation to make himself relevant again, with old friend Shell stringing him along, unwilling to deliver a firm No to KO’s many pathetic pitches to return, but the cold shoulder obvious enough that only one with a king size ego and delusions to match would fail to get that MSNBC was just not that into him.
As always, there are things I like and admire about Keith, but this episode is even more evidence that he is not stable enough to handle a position of responsibility that exposes him to even moderated levels of attention that over heats his ego.
