The conglom's fourth-quarter earnings increased almost 30%...

SB LV ratings for CTV / TSN / RDS were the third-highest in Canuck history...

But they've cut at least 200 people nationwide in recent months...

And now fans in Hamilton, Winnipeg, and Vancouver, all CFL cities, are without the sports talk they crave... only the west-coast city had a competitor, and their replacements are either music or Bloomberg News...

With the possible exception of a handful of shows on KPCC, the traffic reports on KNX, and Tim Conway Jr’s show on KFI, I’ve officially closed the door on what is now known as “terrestrial radio.” I already own the same 30 songs played on every radio station. I don’t care enough about sports, and there are no radio news outlets left to speak of. I believe six companies own roughly 90% of the radio stations in Southern California; there is no variety or choice, and they are programmed using nationwide surveys and focus groups so there’s no regional or community focus. It’s for all intent and purpose a dead form of media.

Bell's replacements will be Comedy radio for Winnipeg and Vancouver.

Hamilton already has Comedy radio, which brings in better numbers than the once-mighty CKOC as TSN 1150.

The only local content on TSN 1150 in Hamilton was CFL games for the Tiger Cats.  Everything else is on the Bell and Rogers sport stations in Toronto.

The rumors of CKOC switching to BNN have been swirling for more than a year.  That said, I can't imagine a direct simulcast of BNN - Canada's Bloomberg branded business TV network - will make any difference.

Eventually they'll throw up their hands and say "we tried" before powering off the (almost) 100-year old station.

Also nottv...

The Hamilton funny station Funny820 has a morning Show that is actually a simulcast of a podcast... Humble and Fred.   They sometimes have decent guests.

Riding back to the Calgary airport in a hotel shuttle several years back, I was quite surprised to learn that a comedy-formatted station on terrestrial radio was a thing….

Wikipedia currently lists four of them in the States: in Bakersfield, CA; Twin Falls, ID (unverified); Albany, OR (Corvsllis); and Georgetown, SC.   B

I'm guessing that the costs to source and produce the content are low. Lower than sports talk real people.  Lower than music fees (if any?).   Lower than music DJs.

The only long term problem is that there is no more live recordings due to the pandemic.
