Much has been and will be said about Lorne Michaels. He deserves praise and recognition, but he also merits whatever legitimate criticism can be hurled his way. All showrunners have the freedom to push forward ideas and people, to spotlight those and provide a megaphone that others do not possess. Perhaps it is the law of averages at play, but time and again, Michaels has given center stage to the wrong people, and he has done so knowingly, and seemingly solely for the purpose of generating buzz or ratings. Trump does not get elected without the help of Lorne Michaels producing SNL and the Tonight show.

I will join you in criticizing Michaels for amplifying Trump in 2016, but what we now know (and can never now not know) about our fellow Americans is that there is a critical and sufficient mass of them that have always had a deep preference for Trumpism.

Sadly, we can not blame Lorne Michaels for Donald Trump.

I would personally say that if you want to blame any media people for Trump, the more likely suspects are Mark Burnett for pitching "The Apprentice" to Trump and Jeff Zucker for greenlighting the series for NBC.  Considering that the people who are in thrall of Trump were more likely to watch this show than "SNL," they're much more guilty than Lorne ever was.  Not to mention the Telepictures execs who brought Trump into a game show format that was eventually called "Trump Card" (even though it was a bomb) and coincidentally bankrolled TMZ as a thing and encouraged a toxic workplace on their talk shows, most notably those of Jenny Jones and Ellen DeGeneres.

I’m not saying Lorne Michaels acted alone; there is blame to go around, but Michaels had previous experience elevating whackadoodles… he knew what he was doing. I’m not sure the guys who backed Trump’s reality show (or game show) knew where he was headed, but by the time he’d been elevated to SNL and had his hair mussed by Idiot Jimmy, it was obvious and deliberate.
