Saw her three times on Broadway - in "Hollywood Arms," "The Lyons," and "The Tale of the Allergist's Wife." She was a good TV performer but an *amazing* stage performer.

And one time I went to see my friend Donna Lynne Champlin doing a cabaret show at Birdland, and Linda and her husband were at the next table over from me, cheering her on. Pretty cool.

I watched Alice when it started and I liked it. But even as a teen I grew tired of Flo saying, "Kiss my grits." The gimmick wore itself out quickly.

So then you have to go back to the original Scorsese movie with Ellen Burstyn ("Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore"). The combination of comedy and pathos would be something to see Linda Lavin do and you know she would pull it off, but when your showrunners are Lucy's former writers and you are stuck in the multi-cam sitcom with audience structure...
