How about what's up at http://www.tvornottv.net
And (perhaps he would appreciate it) - Neil Avedon was found guilty
(one of the few of his questions I knew the answer to).
But the conversation has just begun...
Hear, hear--with all due respect to the many good folk in this group,
there are exactly two people who could make me laugh out loud just
about every time they wrote something. One is Kevin. The other was
Tom. We really have lost more than we'll ever know.

Agreed. I'm in total shock. I don't know that there is anything I can
say to add to what has been said. From the WNN list to the various
incarnations of this group, I've always enjoyed reading to and
laughing at his posts.
My condolences to his family.

I used to put quotes here.
It will be a little sadder knowing that, aside from his direction as
"new chief" status of our community, The Remote Patrol and daily trivia
will not be return - no one could provide both a good laugh and summary
about tonight's TV like Tom could.
When I approached him over a year ago about setting up the tvornottv web
site, in every sense, Tom wanted to make it a community site -
maintained by what he calls his Brain Trust. And at the same time, he
did not want to distract from the mailing list.
I hope our little community can continue strongly in his honor.
And with that, I was the one who switched over the tvornottv.net home
page this morning. I thought a link to his last Remote Patrol was
appropriate. Hopefully, together, we can put up a more permanent
memorial on the web site at a later time... for now, we'll leave up the
test pattern.

A played hookie from teaching for a few hours this morning and walked
to the beach (a benefit of living and working in San Diego). Staring
out at the Pacific Ocean and breathing in the salt air, I think I have
mustered up the stamina to complete the rest of the work day. I'll try
to write something when I get home (writing usually helps me work
strong emotions through my system). I want to try to go through old IM
conversations, and pour through some of Tom's blogs and personal
e-mails he sent me... but I'm not ready for that yet.

hopefully he is enjoying an afterlife colortini with another tom.
I almost fell out of my chair after seeing pedegars' original post.
Not that I read this list as often as certain sites based in or near
north Jersey, but I'll definitely second the part about LOL moments...Sir
Tom was always good for them.
This must have happened real damn suddenly...if I knew I had to go into
hospital, enough days out, I'd certainly have told someone on this and
the other lists I read, even if only privately...
And I'd have sworn he was closer to my age (mid/late 40s)...

Maybe I'm in denial. I'd like to think he's pulling an Andy Kaufman on us.
Not that I talk much on this list, but I'm almost speechless now.

Tom resisted sharing news of his medical state as best he could. Whenever he would say something about it, to me or to the list, that was significant. It's possible that he thought that whatever happened was just another situation, and that he would get past it as he had the others.

Really nice Kevin. The Snyder benediction is just perfect. I they call

> Complete obit at funeral home home page:
As we approach Mother's Day, my thoughts go out to Mother Heald.
Her appearances in "Remote Control" and in Tom's regular e-missives always
captured the inaneness and stupidity of that business we call TV. (A
Thursday quote -- "Why is 'Saturday Night Live' on tonight?")
She raised a son with a caustic wit that, more often than not, made us laugh
at ourselves more than the supposed target. ("Barney Frank doesn't want to
have sex with you either on REAL TIME WITH BILL MAHER.") His measured
snarkiness stands as a testament to good parental guidance.
I can only guess that Mother Heald smiled, and perhaps chuckled, every time
Tom asked for permission to quote her in one of those interweb letters he
always sent out.
So to the Family Heald, my deepest condolences. From now on, it will be a
little more difficult to laugh, but a little easier to smile and remember.
And to Mother Heald, Happy Mother's Day. You raised two fine boys.

It says this on the funeral home website:
Memorials have been established for the American Diabetes Association and the American
Heart Association.
Excellent. Unfortunately, Colortini.com, which I think had Tom S.'s response, is in the ether. From what I remember, people didn't catch on to the "And the Fake One" and contacted Snyder. He read the listings and gave a nice note to Mr. Heald.
"I've had several inquiries about a new show I am
supposedly doing for late night. A writer named Tom
Heald wrote some material for a websire named
TVBarn.com. It is run by Aaron Barnhart, who is the
television critic for the Kansas City Star. Mr. Heald, as a
joke, ran a schedule of shows entitled "Tom Snyder, At
Home in California." The topics ranged from "Dinner
with The Companion" to "Frisbee in the Park with
Oliver." Some people got the joke. But some thought it
was for real. I am here to tell you that it isn't. However,
I am not at all peeved at Mr. Heald. Seven years ago a
television writer for the New York Daily News, named
David Bianculli, playfully suggested that CBS put me on
after Dave Letterman. Had he not done that the
LateLateShow probably would never have happened."

[raising my hand]
Tom came to NYC for a conference a few years ago, and in between workshops, he found his way to the Upper West Side. How you imagine him from his writing, that's ... well, that's exactly who he was in person. Funny and cynical and insightful. Editing the Remote Patrol/TV Picks columns meant a lot of back and forth with him, and I miss that.
Thanks to Kevin from me as well.

10+ years of only getting half of his written wit. damn.
It was heartwarming that so many people appreciated what I wrote, but
in the end, it speaks more about Tom than me. Looking at the log, Tom
posted 5332 times to this message board. The second most frequent
contributor is still 2000 posts behind him, so we as a group have some
mighty big shoes to fill.
Tom's desire for both the website and this message board was to have a
place where a wide ranging group of TV watchers could share their
thoughts and debate ideas about the state of the medium. I hope we as
a group can continue that tradition.
And "According to Jim" is one of the worst shows in the history of
television. It is apropos of nothing, but I think Tom would want that
said.

Earlier today, I contacted Barry Mitchell (The accordion guy from WNN) and notified him. He in turn notified ABC who requested a photo of Tom, and I got him one to give to ABC. In all likelihood, WNN will be airing something about this tonight, so be on the lookout for it.

This is just so sad. So sorry for his family, his friends on and off line - this is so awful.
World News Now did indeed air a tribute to Tom…and I have the clip uploading to YouTube as I’m typing this.
It was very classy and fitting =)

One of Tom's most prized possessions is the hat seen in the clip.
Given to him by one of the folks behind the TV series "Night Court,"
the hat was actually used in an episode of the show where Judge Stone
found himself locked up in a holding cell surrounded by men who all
thought they were Napoleon.

Very nice.
The sign-off is particularly sweet and surprisingly moving. If you
watch it, be sure to stay all the way through past the end of the
Accordian song.
Oh, I needed that laugh. I need to find a way to work 'recount all
$200,000 made during 1971 skyjacking as "D.B. Cooper"' into future
to-do lists, project plans, and meeting agendas.
