I’m working on a metaphor of the TV network as a shopping mall. A mall has anchor stores and smaller stores. The anchors for a network are morning, news, sports, and late night. Prime time shows are like the smaller stores which open in the mall, stay a few years, then close and are replaced by new stores.
Shutting down the Late Show and leasing the time to Byron Allen was like closing an anchor store and opening a Spirit Halloween pop-up store in its place. It gives you an idea of where the mall is heading. I can’t quite fit what’s happening to CBS News into the metaphor. There’s an anchor store that was designed for everybody to shop and now it’s being reorganized so that the mall’s owner will like to shop there whether or not anybody else does.
This prime time special feels like they have just lost whatever identity they had and they’re trying to keep the mall open while the stores are shutting down.
The only funny thing is that this will even exist on the same air that once hosted Letterman, Tom & Craig.
