A preview of Monday's special, where the VP responded to Bill Whitaker's query about the influence of the Israeli prime minister, and the final interview on the actual show were edited differently, leading Trump to "truth" that CBS "must be investigated"... a Harris spokeser referred V back to CBS, which did not respond...

Back in October, a pre-election Don sued CBS (link) for $10 billion over the edits... he now wants twice as much, more than the value of all of Paramount Global after adding them as a defendant, and Tuesday attorneys made their proposals... the network seeking to open le gros orange's books (the campaign, the media holdings, the crypto bearing his name), the plaintiff to get into internal communications at the network...

CBS was entirely in the wrong, and everyone involved ought to be fired. However, as Trump won the election, it would be hard to prove he was injured by their incompetence. If anything, they helped him to win.

Win or lose this issue and he’ll go after Kabletown next.

Having them settle out of court is almost scarier, as the orange legal team could ask for a muzzle on Colbert, Stewart, and CBS News in its terms. Then Paramount has to consider whether the Skydance buyout or their reputation is more important.

CBS News was not even a little bit wrong. Nobody should be fired, nobody needs to apologize.

CBS May end up firing, apologizing, and pain only because they fear probably correctly, that Trump will hold up the sale if they don’t.

It’s a shakedown. There was a season arc just like it on the Sopranos.

========

“His lawsuit originally claimed a violation of the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act, claiming that the network deceptively edited the interview to boost Harris’ electoral chances. The basis of the claim was the fact that, in a Face the Nation promo for the 60 Minutes interview, Harris answered a question differently than the one that was featured in the October 7 60 Minutesbroadcast.

At one point in the interview, correspondent Bill Whitaker asked Harris why Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu was not listening to the Biden administration.

Harris said, “Well, Bill, the work that we have done has resulted in a number of movements in that region by Israel that were very much prompted by, or a result of many things, including our advocacy for what needs to happen in the region. And we’re not going to stop doing that. We are not going to stop pursuing what is necessary for the United States to be clear about where we stand on the need for this war to end.”

In a Face the Nation promo for the interview, Harris was shown giving the first sentence in her answer. On 60 Minutes, she was shown answering with the last sentence. The network said that there was no deception involved, and that the edit was made in the interest of time, a routine practice in broadcast news. In the face of an FCC inquiry, the network turned over an unedited transcript and video of the interview earlier this month.”

The substance of an answer was changed. You don’t do that and continue to call yourself a journalist.

Intent is irrelevant. Interviews can and often are compressed for time, but in this case the editing gave the appearance (right or wrong) that two different answers were given. When pressed, CBS initially did not release the full transcript or full video of the interview, which caused the conspiracy theories to grow.

This should’ve been another otherwise bland interview of an otherwise bland candidate, but CBS’s mishandling of it turned it into a sh*tstorm. Giving CBS every benefit of every doubt, they bungled this, then they bungled their attempts to explain it. It fed into the MAGA cult’s worst fears of the press.

In truth, Harris ought to be suing CBS, because their interview was a huge boost for Trump. Trump should be handsomely rewarding CBS for helping him win.

We disagree about every aspect of this, but the underlying facts are in the public domain so everyone can make their own determination.

It only took five days from my statement above. I hope Disney and WBD are staffing up.

And oh yes--Joy Reid may be a raging homophobe, but how can she be a racist?

When you’re a racist, anybody who disagrees with you is a racist.
