It’s always easy to bash SNL, but I give them credit for trying this, producing an episode which was not worse than a typical week (whatever that might mean to any particular viewer). The Host was predictable but damn if not still comforting.

Maybe I would have liked to see them try to do things a little differently, maybe have cast members do something like their original auditions for the show, or maybe what they would do if auditions for the show today.

Michael Che’s grandmother really did die from the virus last week, and he included a reference to that in his typical way. I happen to like both Che and Jost in WU, but I suspect I am in the minority. Also a nice tribute to Hal Willner.

I'm just going to cross my fingers that they'll get people to record better audio.

We may still be in the minority, but I also like Che and Jost on Update.

I did not, however, care for the audience laughter during Update,

I guess I am easily amused, because I thought they did a good job.  It was clever to use YouTube personalities and the Zoom meeting as the basis for parody, because those things are by nature, done from home.  I enjoyed the Weekend Update segment (was it live?) and hoped for a ScarJo sighting behind Colin Jost, but alas...

I was aware of the deaths from coronavirus associated with the cast (Che's grandmother, and Hal Willmer, the music producer) and I thought the tributes and mentions of those casualties were handled well.

As I understand, the next show (April 18, 2020)  will be a rerun of the John Mulaney/David Byrne episode, but they are working on new material for another, "Live from Home" show to be aired at some point in the future.

Sending good wishes to all of you.  May we come out of this stronger and wiser.

Putting together a show like this is a pretty thankless task. The situation changes so quickly and getting a good reaction to it is nearly impossible, let alone trying to find something funny about it. The one really negative thing I saw is how hollow and lifeless the Trump and Sanders parodies have become. There was never any depth to them as they relied on stunt casting and now they feel stale and out of touch. Doing Weekend Update with people piped in to laugh also failed and I hope they learn that lesson.

I will give credit to Lorne and the cast and crew for not being afraid to fail.

In honor of Grams, Mr Che is paying one month’s rent for everybody in her building.

While not an exact number, as public housing rent charges depend somewhat on location and annual family income (currently family of four low-income threshold is about $68K per year) but at an average monthly rental fee in NYC for a three room (i.e., 2 bedrooms for that family of four) public housing apartment is about $600, So, an estimate of the cost of the reported one-month's rent for the 160 units in his grandmother's building is approx $96K (let's round it to $100K). Yes, he can likely afford it, but still $100K is still a magnanimous gesture. Well done, Michael.
