The NFL finally figured out they couldn’t make a game worth watching. They are going to keep Pro Bowl week and televise a skills competition and a flag football game.

Re Bob’s original post, my memory is that it always used to be in Los Angeles before moving to Hawaii. I haven’t watched the game since then, when I was a kid and there were few sports options on TV between the end of NFL and start of MLB (very few NBA games on TV then).

The idea of flag football plus skills competitions has been around for a long time, and the game has stunk for a long time, so I wonder what really got them to make the change now? I assume declining TV ratings in general have got even the monsters that run the NFL to try to be a little more proactive.

The AP article says where it was played during which years. My theory about the Pro Bowl game was that the NFL wrote into media contracts that a network had to carry the game and give it a certain level of promotion. Everyone knew the game is a dud but they had to pretend to get excited about it.

And just because Peyton mentioned it on the Manningcast, he will be coaching the AFC team in the flag football game and he’s looking for an NFC coach.

Scott Frost has some free time on his hands

This concludes my football references for the decade
