As a regular... he'd cameo'd in the Season 2 finale... https://variety.com/2022/tv/news/paul-rudd-only-murders-in-the-building-season-3-1235347859/ (link)     B

Seeing as how the finale isn’t available until midnight tonight, that counts as a spoiler.

It's already available -- it's a Hulu "Tuesday" show, which means new episodes become available as Monday becomes Tuesday in the Eastern time zone. (Here in Southern California, I watched it at about 9:30 Monday night.)

Yeah I saw “available Tuesday at 12 AM” and thought it meant Tuesday night.

This series is a pleasure to watch. Even two actresses I dislike are pleasant on this show.

While I can only guess who those actresses are (I have my suspicions ...), Rudd may be a bridge too far for me. I honestly can't stand the guy.

So now I'll ask... Kev, are neither of these Selena G?     B

I have always been a fan of Ms Gomez as an individual. Her music is not to my liking, but most pop music isn’t so I don’t judge her harshly for that. She’s very stiff in the first couple episodes, but her character is stiff for reasons explained as the series unfolds. She does not have the comedic timing of Martin or Short, but that’s a high bar to reach… Gomez holds her own, though, which is commendable.

I am generally averse to Tiny Fey, mostly because 30 Rock was not as good as many thought it was. But the one I find genuinely devoid of talent is Amy Schumer. Her entire act seems to be “I’m blonde and have breasts so if you don’t think I’m funny you can f*ck off.” That act would work if she actually was funny. But she stages it that any guy who doesn’t laugh at her jokes must be sexist, and any guy who points out that her jokes aren’t funny must be because of how she looks.

Having watched the finale, I still assert the Rudd announcement should have been handled as a spoiler. It came out less than 12 hours after the episode was made available and that’s not enough of a window to assume people will have watched it. I’m not especially sensitive to spoilers so I won’t belabor the point.

Selena Gomez’s character holds the show together. Martin and Short need someone to keep them grounded. I really like that Mabel is drawn up to be emotionally closed and an introvert because the traditional idea of bringing in a young woman to balance two older men is to use her as window dressing.

It’s just a fact of life that people who generate some heat on SNL are going to be considered comedy rock stars. A few continue to hit after they leave the show and while others can’t live up to it, they can certainly find a place to do good work. On this show, even with the name recognition, Fey was given a character to do and she did it well.

Amy Schumer did some popular comedy specials, got a high profile tour or two, got a movie, and it seems she has nothing to follow it up with. She added nothing to the show.

Those would not have been my guesses ...

My own two "can't stand-ems" are Jackie Hoffman, who has always given overplaying a bad name, and MacLaine, who has -- to the best of my recollection -- given only one performance that I found even remotely tolerable, and -that- was in 1962.

Gomez would be fine if she could somehow move her voice out of the back of her throat. I generally dislike Schumer, but have to admit she was quite (surprisingly) good in "The Humans." Fey is Fey. Good in some things, not in others. As much as I liked "30 Rock," "Mr. Mayor" was a series of missed opportunities, but I guess that's what one gets when one gives Bobby Moynihan too much rope.

I will miss Houdyshell, who is a national treasure.

Hoffman barely registered with me. Neither good nor bad… just forgettable. MacLaine is one of those character actors, and you either like her character or don’t. I like her, but fully understand those who don’t.

To Dan Fogleman's credit, Schumer (like Sting before her) was used sparingly, and was largely discarded one she was no longer necessary to the plot.  She wasn't kept around to cause 'wacky hijinks' or whatever passes for wacky on this show, that already includes a swearing parrot and Nathan Lane: Straight Adulterer.
