I watched the Fox Sports documentary and it had a feel that he wasn’t long for this world and they wanted to get it on the air.

He was one of the great sportscasters. I enjoyed his commentary a lot.
This was a good appearance on Letterman.
Off camera he was an ahole who took advantage of his celebrity and made many enemies in the sports press.

He was great. And then…he wasn’t. He smartly quit coaching 5 years too soon, then stayed in broadcasting maybe ten years too long. His lasting influence on televised football has been horrendous, and we have only just started recovering. For decades commentators imitated the Madden shtick, combining bombast, faux every man self presentation, with self important analysis that, in the hands of most non-Maddens, was most often nonsense.

I still get a kick out of saying “doink” when a field goal attempt hits the upright, or reminding myself that one cheek equals two feet when looking at replays of receptions near the boundary. But I was tired of the Madden act for years before he finally retired.

There was a period that ended a few years ago where KCBS (the Bay Area all-news radio station) would have him on during drive time to give his opinions and observations on sports and current events.

Let's be charitable and say he was no Red Barber. He wasn't even Floyd the Barber.
