Bunch of bizarre tweets. A reminder she is mentally ill.

Racism is better classified as stupidity rather than mental illness.

Then again, when Wanda Sykes thinks you’ve crossed the line, you’ve got to reevaluate your grasp on reality.

Wow, this was a rapidly advancing story - seems like less than 12 hours from racist tweet to show cancellation.

I believe Rosanne is mentally ill - that is not based on her racist comments, and may in many respects be unrelated to her racist comments. It is just true I think (I don’t mean that in my professional judgement she is mentally ill, but that I think she has been judged mentally ill by examining professionals).

This is relevant not as an excuse for her comments, but as the reason why she probably is not stable enough to be in the high powered glare of a top rated broadcast TV show. As I have noted here previously, it is a shame because she really is a talented comic, and has a much-needed voice in many respects. I was hoping she would be well enough to do the White House Corrospondent’s Gig next year (I suppose she still might, though I hope her friends help her make some good decisions for herself).

I don’t care about the show, and the Trump Resistance will be played out in more important arenas than this. I do care about Roseanne Barr as a person, and this is the kind of thing that could knock her over the edge.

Being racist doesn't qualify you as mentally ill, but my sense is Roseanne is not racist 24/7. It oozes out of her when she cycles into a mental illness phase. Like maybe she is off her meds or developed resistance to them.

What Roseanne has said and done in recent years has been consistent... her Tweets today were neither new nor worse than things she’s posted prior. This is who she is, emboldened — maybe — by the racist in the White House, but this is who she is.

What is going to suck is ABC will be forgiven for putting on her show now that she’s crossed whatever arbitrary line she crossed that forced them to pull it. Sorry, but I don’t credit them for solving a problem they created.

Here’s what needs to happen next:

The Blackish “take a knee” episode needs to air in Roseanne’s time slot.

Whomever gave Roseanne’s reboot the green light at ABC should be fired.

Whomever blocked the airing of the Blackish “take a knee” episode should be fired.

The previously scheduled Roseanne repeat was pulled (on the East Coast at least) for a rerun of The Middle.

Vulture (and I'm sure others) are reporting that reruns of the show on cable and streaming networks are getting pulled a la The Cosby Show.

The latest in the Twitter centrifuge: the Right wants Bill Maher off the air; the liberal consensus appears to be “Meh.”

HBO is not a commercial network so the gameplay would be different, but if someone can finally get Lassie to tell us where Maher touched her, perhaps Kevin will be vindicated.

Neither the right nor the left are served by Maher being on the air. And fans of humor definitely don’t benefit. Those who openly discriminate against Muslims benefit by Maher staying on the air... expect to see Roseanne as a guest on Real Time soon, before her FoxNews series is announced.

“@therealroseanne, you break my heart -- You are a sorry excuse for a human being. How odd that you, as a comedienne, have forgotten then meaning of a "joke" and a personal comment. Your meanness is staggering and will earn you a ticket to a sad, lonely and sorry life.”

I only met her once, briefly, at an awards show. I did not get an unpleasant vibe from her, but I didn't get to chat with her for very long.

I wonder if she likes "The Great Escape"?

Agreed. This really was one of the most predictable melt-downs of the Trump Era (perhaps the only thing more predictable is that Trump himself will melt down three times a week). I saw two or three stories today about why ABC was able to move to fast on this - they all implied that they had anticipated something like this might happen and may even have had several components of the response pre-positioned. But what I did not read was what I really suspect must be true - that they had some kind of special insurance policy out on her for just this kind of thing. I wonder if somehow pulling the plug quickly helped Disney/ABC demonstrate that the end of the show was directly caused by Roseanne’s instability, and not other factors (i.e. political). If not that, then at least having a pretty big insurance policy may have made it easier for ABC to pull the plug so easily (though losing the #3 show still has to hurt).

This is one of the all time great corporate uses of social media in defense of their brand. It also sharpens the point:

The problem with Roseanne is not her racist, anti-Semitic and Islamaphobic beliefs; she has been clear about these for some time, and if they were the problem she would never have gotten another gig at ABC. The problem is her impaired judgment in sharing these beliefs while starring in a hit network show. She promised she would not do this, but could not keep her promise. I blame her poor mental health, she is trying to blame Ambien.

I hate to think of Tom Arnold as the voice of reason. But he does make some solid points in this Hollywood Reporter article, namely that Roseanne tweeted as an act of self-sabotage and a way of getting out of the show. He said if the show went to a second season she would have found another way to wreck it. Also he says he told ABC that they should have taken her phone or at least dictate tweets to an assistant in order to avoid fatal damage.

I also saw his interview with Cooper. Arnold knows what most of us know, only more personally; Roseanne is not well, and the people who care about her and encouraged her to do this reboot did not serve her interests. I’m  not sure about the idea of intentional sabotage, but part of her pattern is being self-destructive, and the probability of doing so get stronger the more attention and pressure she has.

Roseanne Barr return possible, but lesser platform likely

By ANDREW DALTON
AP Entertainment Writer
LOS ANGELES (AP) - After her network dropped her show, streaming services dropped her reruns, and her agency dropped her for a racist tweet, Roseanne Barr is vowing she's not finished. Whether anyone will have her is an open question.
Experts say network TV, where she saw huge success both on the original "Roseanne" and the recent reboot, is not really a possibility now.
Eric Dezenhall, who runs a crisis-management firm, says if she's willing to make less money there are outlets including streaming services and podcasts where her style of outrageous statements would be encouraged.
Barr has already received one offer: A former aide from the President Donald Trump campaign says he's starting a streaming service called Bond later in June and had considered her as a contributor even before her show's cancellation.

Two things worth mentioning. First, every major and most minor companies now have clauses in all contracts regarding hate speech and social media, beyond a standard morals clause. In Trump’s America I don’t rule anything out, but anybody who hires her has to know that — at least for the foreseeable future — she is toxic, and anybody she interacts with while employed by a company would be able to add that company to any lawsuits related to her outbursts, past, present, or future. Second, in Hollywood, there are times when one might take a small pay cut (i.e. for an Indie film or a “labor of love” project), but for Roseanne to go the route of lesser media (i.e. The Blaze or Brietbart or whatever Bond turns out to be), she would effectively be slashing her price forever. I realize she currently has nobody representing her, but no agent in his or her right mind would advise her to do that. Again, not saying that won’t happen, but you can count those who emerged from the “new media” rabbit hole on one hand.

Roseanne is currently content to piss into the Twitter wind. Seen it before (Charlie Sheen)... all the ego stroking, and no actual responsibilities. She gets the attention she craves, and the rest of us can block her. That seems a fitting end to her career.

For those still following the Deconstruction of Falling Barrs, Joe Rogan announced she would not be appearing on his podcast as scheduled/announced, basically because she stopped talking to him.

"The Roseanne podcast is not happening today. She’s not doing well and doesn’t want to travel, and she’s gone radio silent on me, so I’m just going to step away. The whole thing has been pretty brutal on her, and I hope she can find some peace."

I always like this joke because you have to be of a certain age to get it.

Surprisingly, she's only 67. (Fun fact: she voiced John Ehrlichman in a contemporary NPR production of the Watergate transcripts.)

Roseanne's latest explanation is that the "Planet of the Apes" reference was not to Valerie Jarrett being black but to anti-Semitism since that was Rod Serling's message when he wrote the "Planet of the Apes."
That might be plausible if she hadn't just tweeted a bunch of other bizarre conspiracy tweets.

Bullshit.

I won’t bother excavating all the layers of bullshit - the stink speaks for itself. I will just point out that when you thank Hannity for his support right after a lame and transparent denial of racism, the bullshit content is trebled.

Roseanne says she thought Valeria Jarrett was white. Screams it. Then how does she explain the "Planet of the Apes" reference? Does she expect us to buy that Rod Serling crap?

I can't speak to her frame of mind or the bubble she is in, but she may not have seen her tweet would lead to career suicide. This is a desperation move - she's hoping that she can prove that her intent was not racist and she made a mistake. I think it her frame of mind or bubble which makes her think it could restore her good name.

Roseanne now claiming she was fired from ABC because she supported Israel. In an era when Tweets and audio/video recordings are public record, it will never cease to amaze me when people try to rewrite history. And it will never cease to depress me when they succeed.

When she came to wealth and (showbiz) power it's possible she could have gotten away with something like this. So she might not be aware how things have changed.

In Israel Tel Aviv is a relatively lefty city with European sensibilities. Jerusalem is poorer, more conservative, and obviously religious. I don't know where Roseanne made her remarks or how big the crowd was, but I don't see people in Tel Aviv buying it.

Roseanne was to ABC what Megyn Kelly was to NBC. Each got paid a ton of money, did what they predictably would do, and got fired by a shocked network.
