LOS ANGELES (AP) - Constance Wu is explaining why she appeared unhappy that "Fresh Off the Boat" was renewed for a sixth season.
In a lengthy statement posted to her Twitter page Saturday, the actress says she loves her ABC sitcom but she was "temporarily upset yesterday" because its renewal means she will have to give up another project that she feels "really passionate" about.
Wu says her role on the show is "easy and pleasant," but she would prefer to seek out challenges.
When ABC announced the renewal Friday, Wu said in a series of tweets Friday that it was not welcome news, and she was extremely upset by it.
Wu's star rose considerably in 2018 with her lead role in "Crazy Rich Asians," a major hit that got her a Golden Globe nomination.

It's an odd series of Tweets. I wonder if she is difficult to work with?

The show was on the bubble. Seems likely her "people" were betting on cancellation, and were making big plans for her in other directions.

Look for a sympathy note from Pierce Brosnan, pointing out that there are second chances in life.

Happened to catch last night’s Seth Meyers on my archive this morning. Wu was on and did a pretty emotional first segment discussing her new book (collection of stand alone essays), the last one of which deals with her suffering at the hands of an unnamed toxic male producer the first two years of FOTB. She said he touched her (not clear in what way, but certainly in an unwanted way), ordered her to wear shorter skirts, and other things that made her uncomfortable. She said as she felt more comfortable about her job security she was able to say No to the guy. This was the context for her Tweet about being frustrated the show had been renewed for a final season. She got a lot of negative backlash for that, and I think (maybe it’s in this thread somewhere) she has said elsewhere she was suicidal for a while.
