For some reason I went to Wikipedia to read about an old show that was shown on the CBC in the 1970s.  The show was On The Buses.

The wiki says there were some episodes that were broadcast in black and white due to the Colour Strike.   What the hell is a colour strike?    A pissed off Union that turned off the relatively new colour signal. What a unique labour protest.

Didn't that strike hit Upstairs Downstairs also?

Yeah--the black-and-white episodes did not air on "Masterpiece Theatre" in the U.S. and are more or less considered "lost episodes," although I believe they're still in ITV's archives. AFAIK, they were never computer colorized.

The power of the unions around that time was impressive. The really big one was in 1979 when ITV went off air for 11 weeks. At the time there were only three networks in the UK, and the other two were BBC1 and BBC2. So the only commercial channel was effectively shut down.

The audiences that the BBC got at the time were consequently enormous since there was literally nothing else to watch.
