During last night's News At Ten, they aired a package on the death of Kobe Bryant. Except that smack dab in the middle of it was footage of LeBron James.

Based on what was shown, the best guess from the Twitterverse is that someone did a search on Bryant and grabbed the first thing they found, which was James passing Bryant on the all-time scoring from Saturday night.

I saw this go out last night. It was one clip in a series of - no doubt hastily compiled clips. They apologised later in the newscast and online. Talking to a someone who has a better idea about these things, I think the clip was indeed in the system from the previous day when James passed Bryant's record (itself a story that was unlikely to have appeared on main UK TV sports coverage).

Interestingly,Kobe Bryant was top story last night. I mention this because the NBA really isn't a massive sport in the UK. Indeed I suspect that the mistake was made because the people assembling the package didn't know what he looked like (yes it clearly said "James" on his vest in the rogue clip, so no real excuses). There definitely *are* massive NBA fans in the UK including a lot of other British professional sportsmen and women, but I think it was top of the news because culturally he's such an important figure.

Yeah, listening to Newshour on BBC World, they seemed to be struggling to summarize why Bryant’s death was worth talking about. For me personally as a a SoCal native, for years Bryant WAS The Lakers. Back in the ‘80s when I actually followed sports, there were stars on The Lakers, but they were part of a team. By Kobe’s era, teamwork had devolved to “just get the ball to Kobe.” While I am obviously biased towards the ‘80s players, there are maybe a handful of people who could actually take the burden of being a one-man NBA franchise and run with it, and Kobe Bryant was one of them.

Speaking of flagrant fouls, listen to what Alison Morris said on MSNBC.  She apologized for saying Nakers.
