The NHL has an upcoming in season tournament. When I watch games on ABC, Hulu, or Max there’s constant promotion of the tournament. In every other part of my world there is no mention of it, like it doesn’t even exist. Is this tournament a big deal in Canadian sports media? I’m thinking of the world junior tournament which gets a lot of attention in Canada and none in the USA.

It’s not even on the level of World Juniors here. Hockey media are interested, I’m not sure anybody else is.

That may pick up when the tournament actually starts, but other than the Canada-USA game on the 15th (which is interesting only because of everything else going on), but I doubt it.

As far as I can tell, this is the first season that the NHL is doing this, so I can understand a relative lack of buzz surrounding it.

For comparison, the NBA started it's own in-season tournament during the 23-24 season, held in November-December when NBA and NFL seasons overlap.  They don't have special teams for it, and some of the games also count for the regular season, so it doesn't quite match up.  But this tournament doesn't get a lot of attention even while it's going on.

In 2016 there was a similar World Cup of Hockey tournament. It was played before the season started and the NHL made a big deal about it being an international tournament played on NHL rinks with NHL rules and referees. Maybe I remember more coverage of it because I got a daily newspaper then.

The most straightforward reason this tournament isn't taking off is that there is no Russian team. You can't do the best of the best when you eliminate one of the best countries. That's why this isn't taking off.

Of course, the fact that the US has turned heel isn't helping either.

Yes, without Russia or the Czechs, this is a Temu World Cup.

The US's heel turn is the only thing helping this tournament.

I just checked the four games in Montreal on SeatGeek. The get-in price for the Canada-USA game is just over $300 American, Canada-Sweden is at about $120, and the other two games are less than half that.

$300 is a lot to pay just to boo an anthem, but there is no accounting for taste some times.

A certain former sportscaster and political commentator now podcaster has pointed out that the NHL has really messed this up. There is no professional sportsball being played next week and they could have used the opportunity to get some more eyes on their game.

Instead, this.
